Shoot the rioters!!!

Sometimes I despair about this country. YouGov has come out with a poll that says 33% of people think the police should be allowed live ammunition to deal with the riots. So much for a liberal democracy.

I always take these things with a pinch of salt.

For example, look at the sample size: 2534 people ... out of a population of 66 million, of which let's say 50 million are adults, then the sample size is approximately 0.005% - or 1/200th of 1% of the population!

So what the survey actually says is that 33% of 0.005% of the population think that live ammunition should be used. Furthermore, we don't fully know what demographic that sample represents.

There are lies, damn lies, and statistics ....

They're allowed to have their opinion. Just as I'm allowed to have mine. My opinion is that those who advocate summary execution are vindictive morons.

On a sample size of 2,500 the polling accuracy should be within a percent or so so its arguing whether its 31 or 35%. Samples used for political polling for elections are less than half that and are reasonably good at getting the the same ballpark as the final result.

You just look at the outcry over what is going on in Syria and what happened in Bahrain and elsewhere and yet around one third of the people in this country think the police should go out shooting rioters on the street. As I say I despair sometimes.

I despair

The question was:
"Do you think the police should or should not be able to use the following in the course of dealing with rioters"
If that's really the conclusion you draw from a yes answer to that question then you my dear sirs are the morons.
Or is merely your deliberate intention to misrepresent the facts because you are intolerant of opinions that do not match your own?

Deary me. You appear to be having trouble with basic comprehension.

"My opinion is that those who advocate summary execution are vindictive morons."

Is about as unambiguous as it gets, whereas the petition is anything but.

At no point did I state what the opinion of those signing the petition might be.

Perhaps you might reflect on what was actually said before wading in with your size twelves.

The question isn't really clear enough.

Shooting people who are looting PoundWorld is excessive (although you could argue you're putting them out of their own misery).

But if I was trapped in an upstairs flat and rioters where about to throw petrol bombs into the shop below, I'd want the police to open fire with all they've got.

Well the particular question was actually "Do you think the police should or should not be able to use firearms/live ammunition in the course of dealing with the rioters?" to which 33% said yes, they should.
