There's Hawk Cycles but if you live in Sheldon you'll know about that anyway. A lot of people dismiss their bikes as BSOs but the ones who've actually bought them talk rather fondly about them on forums.

Theres the specialized concept store at the fort. They have a huge carpark for a decent "try a few bikes" demo and you should be able to get a proper demo once you have decided what model of bike suits you best.

Gascoigne's in Coleshill.
Red Kite in Shirley.
Mike Vaughan in Kenilworth.

Does he want bling??? How much has he got to spend?? Have a look in Dynamic Rides in Hockley Heath. ( I will get some commission there ^_^ )

We could arrange a meeting for some impartial advice.

If he doesn't know what he wants, he'll get much better service if he visits the local bike shops with me.
I am known in the area. Even in Halfords at Sheldon

Cheers, but when I chatted to him he asked about an argos....by all accounts has cash to burn.
I'm loaning him a Sirrius for two weeks.

Thanks for the advice people I'll pass it on, I'm not sure he knows what riding he will do more of yet.
A few collegues ride and I think that has sparked his interest(they're TA a touch older than most and want to avoid injury but still get some CV in).
I live in Manchester hence asking for shops in his area....my suggestion based on a brief chat was visit a multi brand shop and get some test rides once he's decided what type of riding he is likely to do or a Triban 3 to get him into riding without splashing the wonga hence lending him my Sirius.

If he's anywhere near the centre then I'd recommend Bicicielo (Pinarello & Assos concept shop). These guys are top notch and really know their stuff (and the owner is an ex pro-continental team rider). Expect some pretty expensive bike porn in there, but also stuff to suit lower budgets.

Oh and the local Evans is also on the same road.

Definitely this. We're pretty lucky in Birmingham to have a shop as quality as Bicicielo. My LBS still gets some love, though.

Redkite, I've been in there a few time with quite a wedge to spend and just find then snobby standoffish, if your known to them or part of the clique you're ok. There are at least 20 or so roadies I work with here and not one has a good word for Redkite. There's a little know place in Earlswwod on Poolhead road cult racing cycles, give him (paul) a try I had my Kuota from him. Like as already mentioned ,the new Dynamic rides place is nice, top brand stuff a bit boutique, that's my last stop on my Sunday morning ride, the cafe is nice too. There's also a decent Giant dealer on kings heath High street, cant recall the name, another Vote for Bicicielo, my boss had his Pinarello from them, if you want a shop where they know their stuff then this is the place.
