Should I have my dog put down?

Would you not consider the circumstances of each individual case?

A high energy dog that is not getting the required mental and physical stimulation it needs - wouldn't you consider trying a behavioural referral (with owner's consent) or trying to find a rescue space? (though I realize the rescue situation is difficult, especially with older dogs).

Of course, I'm talking from a legal standpoint.

Come on Becs an owner comes in and tells you a dog has bitten him with no provocation, and is a danger to the public and you put it down ?

I can't really comment without examining the animal, but I will not tolerate an aggressive dog in my house. Returning it to the rescue centre is entirely appropriate, however they will find rehoming a 10 year old collie with a history of biting an owner very difficult.

I genuinely don't think I am (lacking empathy), and neither am I deliberately trying to be offensive for the sake of it.

I disagree that Yello sounds like a caring well meaning guy. From my point of view, he appears to know what the dog needs, but by his own admission lacks the dedication to meet the dogs needs. Now as a result of a lack of communication/mismanagement is considering having the dog put to sleep.

To put it bluntly, it seems that the dog is a bit of an inconvenience, Yello's screwed up, and then posts seeking reassurance that it's o.k. to kill the dog as a result of his neglect.

They were not put on earth to be a companion (though they can, and often do make good companions), they were selectively bred to do different jobs. If not employed in the role for which they bred, they need to be stimulated - physically and mentally - in other ways. Yello knows this, but lacks the dedication to meet the dog's needs.

These circumstances should be taken into account (morally if not legally) in making the decision as to whether or not the dog is to be PTS. Putting a dog to sleep shouldn't be done as a matter of convenience.

absolutely. They are repositories of human hopes, fears and anxieties, whose virtue lies in their lack of sophistication, their lack of historical conscience and their submission to the will of humans. None of which is bad.
