I'd be interested to know how a dog would know what's in a syringe.
If a dog can tell the difference because of the emotions of those around, then it's as I've already said.
it might know from the looks on its owners face, or the behaviour of the vet. it might also be possible that it could smell the death in the form of the substance in the syringe. at any rate you simply dont know that the animal feels no emotion, although it seems fairly clear that you really dont. i hold it as self evident that animals experience recall of happy and unhappy experiences and have both emotions and a sense of their own history however rudimentary a human might classify it relative to their own. the slightest amount of contact time with a dog or cat should be enough to demonstrate that they can experience fear, thrill, devotion, lust etc etc. then again some humans can go a lifetime without displaying such basic animal traits so maybe its not always so easy for those people to recognise emotions in others.
anyway all that tangent aside, my message to the op is, dont be swayed by your head by default. if your heart is saying let the dog live, then you ought to listen to that too. emotion is a powerful and valid argument.
