Finally dared to light our fire for the first time yesterday … it was freezing here and we’d put off the first burn for long enough. Really noticed this morning when we came down … so warm and cosy !

A few years ago the local coal merchant retired and nobody took his place for a couple of years.
The Forestry Commission as it was then called gave blanket permission to help yourself to anything left after harvesting.
Every weekend the island reverberated with the noise from multitudes of chain saws. Mature and dried bits were soon cleared and many took to burning stuff too green.
The Fire Brigade became very busy with chimney fires.

They're pretty useful! No idea what they cost today or how many in a pack, but @Hill Wimp (who is in charge of burning things (including food and saucepans) likes them....
