Comfy armchair to one person & a plank to the next
I don't jump red lights when I cycle or drive.
It's illegal, irresponsible and dangerous.
Not always illegal, not always irresponsible and often safer than waiting at the stop line for a phoney driver to run you over.

Also if a cyclist does it it just gives further ammunition to the anti cycling crowd who label all as red light jumpers anyway.
They don't need ammo, or any basis in reality, to keep on their hate campaign against less-polluting transport.

As a rural cyclist and have absolutely no concerns about ignoring red lights where I think it pragmatic.
Traffic lights on bridges and junctions etc I'll comply with, but if there is a half mile stretch of cones, and the road inside the cones rideable, then there I go. I'll even hop off and push the bike along a footpath if it suits me.
A terrible attitude I know...

I have been instructed by the workers at one set of temporary lights to cycle through the coned off section

Wrong.
I suggest you check the highway code

if the light was green when you entered the ASL box, passed the first line, its perfectly permitted for you to stop in the box then because of queuing traffic, or oncoming traffic preventing you from making progress to an exit, this is not a box junction. And if the light goes red whilst you are sat in the box, you havent jumped a red light and are allowed, in fact encouraged to stay put till the next phase.

Correct. Recommended that you don't but not forbidden under HC rules. That difference between 'must' and 'should' again.

This though an example of temporary lights in a quiet rural area as opposed to permanent red lights in a city. Yes by law the same rules applies but I agree a modicum of common sense can be applied.

‘Common sense’ and ‘law’ are two different things.
Common sense would say empty roads at 3am means the red light can be negotiated with caution.
Law says to do so would be a crime.

Maybe with advanced in highway authority at quite times traffic lights could be replaced by an illuminated mini roundabout.
Separately local social media showed some idiots believe speed limits do not apply after 9pm

Yep. What's interesting though is some seem to think it's not illegal to jump a red light.
Have to wonder, do those who do it on a bike also do it in a car.
