Single or double chainring

For reasons posted elsewhere in thinking of swaying more to a CX bike than road. Question is, for practicality is a double chain ring better and allow more versatility or is a single chainring more than sufficient.
Usage will be road to trails and moderate trails with some CX events winter & summer.

1x11 is great for mtb but id go 2x10 or 11 for a cx bike..it will be far better on longer tarmac spells

1x CX bikes don't need silly low gears, as it's quicker to get off and run with the bike. Great for competitions but not that useful on the daily commute

2x would be better for a general purpose bike
