Ohh.............me mum turned 50 last year and i'll probably be the first to wish you..............see i'm 5 hours ahead of you in time too.

Its curious. Most people in London would not think about going out by car taking the Tube, train, bus or cab instead irrespective of social status. Outside of London that seems to be regarded as something of a problem.

That is because it IS a problem. There are no tube stations, buses are every hour [unless they miss of course] and a taxi will cost about £50 for two way pick up / return from where I live into town [more of course if the lady lives in another direction]. A few of nights out like that and it's not much dearer to run a car.
As said the simplest option is to keep the car for the present but don't make any secret of what you're intending to do. If she agrees and says it's a great idea, fine. If she tells you to b----r off then you know she may not really the one for you, simples.
