Small woman's tourer

This cropped up on another thread about big men but my wife wants a custom made tourer as we have been unable to satisfy her needs off the peg (ooh er, matron). Hewitts seem to be an automatic recommendationand one I will take up if necessary. The slight problem is that we are on the south coast and ideally we'd like to get somewhere more accesible. Any suggestions gratefully received.

ps. rickangus put me off Roberts which was my first choice for convenience

pps. anyone want to buy a small size Edinburgh Coop Country Revolution!?

Have you looked at the Specialized Tri Cross? I'm assuming you have but my friend has one in a 49 - she's 5'3" though. Anyway it works very well for her. Also have a look at Ribble cycles too. They do quite wee bikes.

What were the issues with Roberts? I've only ever heard good things and their bicycles are very nice.

Other thoughts...

Mercian in Derby.
Do SJS do anything in that size with 26" wheels. Think they also do some custom stuff. Might be worth a call?


Also the Salsa Casseroll goes down to a 48, but is not a true heavyweight tourer if that is required. Nice though and well reviewed in C+

I'm willing to be persuaded but also looking on their website the choice for a woman's tourer is much more limited than for a man's. I'm not sure what that means in terms of a custom build. The Thorn's have flat bars IIRC which she doesn't like. It is a fairly heavyweight tourer rather than a light one required. Front and rear panniers used.
I'll ring Roberts to clarify what they offer but I've heard nothing but praise for Hewitts so despite the trek it's looking favourite at the mo.

wow a cool bike builder in the sowf! I may look at this for a new road bike soon. I like the idea of being able to have an input in what th ebike looks like...although I would ned to rely on th ebuilder for the techy stuff of which I know zippo.
