I use an Allen key to remove Hollowtech 2. The Allen key works on any Allen bolt of the correct diameter. In fact I can use the same Allen key on other parts of my bike.

Replacement HT2 bottom brackets are typically £15. The OPs crankset has cost them approx 0.3p per mile. It is hardly mega bucks.

HT2 installation is typically 2-3 times ST cost.

Nope, unless going for the latest and greatest 11 speed or something. It’s simply not that expensive. You’ll pay 5 times as much for a smartphone that won’t last as long. You’ve clearly been looking in the wrong places at something you hsve already discounted anyway.

Yes, it was exactly £15. They're cheap and easy to fit. But of course it wasn't the BB that was the issue (I could probably have rescued the BB if I'd really wanted to)

The pricey bit of my chainset (likely all HT chainsets, though I'm not sure?) is the fancy big ring.

They often cost nearly as much as a whole new chainset incl cranks and both rings!

Oh I know, but this idea that HT2 is a major expense needs knocking on the head. The cost per mile is minuscule.

In the middle of the arm. It's a long time ago, but as I recall it was a classic fatigue failure; you could see the original flaw and then the crack having slowly propagated from it.

Google tells me that failures of either arm or spindle at the interface are a thing.

Happened literally right in front of a bike shop who I still suspect of having a crank death ray destroyer gun to boost business, taking aim at unsuspecting passing students.

Yes; sounds like the flaw was to blame if the failure was in the centre of the crank arm since the bending moment would be higher at the BB spindle, so assuming the arm wasn't slimmed excessively in the middle the flaw was significant in causing the failure.

Regardless of where it failed a knackered crank can't be a pleasant thing to deal with and you likely did well not to come off

Because when the Hollow Technology 2 bearings of my previous bike failed (alot play) I saw the dealer needed a chisel and a hammer to get the other half (driveside) loose.

Yes because the crankset is not the bottom bracket. The bearings are in the bottom bracket. But even with a HT2 bottom bracket; if you are using a chisel and hammer, then you are a crack handed buffoon.

Me thinks you just pickpecked a cheapskate nonamer.
It's even unusable to me since ring has a max 38T.
Material likely also 6061 instead of 7075.
