Why is it that some people just will not follow signage or road rules?. Is it arrogance, selfishness or just stupidity?.
As in school exams...'discuss':

I see it often during roadworks, it's the real new normal.

I can’t get into my head the mentality that says it’s acceptable to do this.

In saying that would be interesting to see how well that closure was signposted at the start of the road as once down that road there was no turning back with the queue of traffic behind you.

As part of my job, I have worked inside traffic management on motorways, scary at the best of times. The 'TM' as we call it, has a safety zone at the start which is why you get the tapering cones with no-one working inside - it's meant to be a buffer zone. On one occasion, we had a driver pull into the buffer zone to make a mobile call... We were instructed by police to take reg numbers.

On another occasion, working in a supermarket car park in Bolton, we taped off areas where we were going to dig. Next day, tape cut, cones put aside as people parked in the workspace. I eventually got security to help and the night before, we built 'barricades' around the work areas consisting of upturned shopping trolleys.... Next day, you could see motorists giving us the old 'black look'.

I've said it before but we appear to be in an age of 'selfish arrogance' whereby people, referring to the tabloid cry of 'nanny state', think they personally know best and so break the rules since they don't give a s**t.

They don't behave because the penalties are too soft and the chances of being caught too slight.

When I'm PM all moving traffic offences will carry a ban, starting with low level speeding at 7 days, then 28 for the second, 6 months for the third. You can guarantee that'll suddenly make a lot of people behave. Anyone caught driving while disqualified will get an automatic 6 months stay at HMP Butlins - none of this simply telling them off and extending their ban.

Those who are convicted of causing death-by won't be allowed to drive again - a shotgun licence holder would never be allowed a licence again after killing someone unlawfully (even if the crime did not involve the weapon), so why should killers who use kinetic energy weapons be allowed on the road again? No consequences to bad behaviour = continuance of said bad behaviour.

Bring back the birch! Hang 'em high!

Many years ago my wife's aunt pulled into the normally very busy carpark to find it completely empty, she couldn't understand why it was empty so proceeded to amuse the kids in the car by driving around & around in circles. They then suddenly saw this guy running towards them, screaming & shouting at them. The car park had been closed for resurfacing & she had just ripped up the freshly laid tarmac, the guy & the rest of the team were not very happy :laugh:

Although this one has now been blocked with bollards on the pavement there are many more going in across London. A number will have cameras fitted to monitor those passing through as they will allow emergency services etc through legitimately but not normal vehicles. A big problem is that the satnav companies haven't caught up and drivers blindly follow these without paying attention to advance signage.

A mate was at a roadworks with a stop-go lollipop to control the traffic. A "salesman type" in a BMW or Jag pushed through after the sign had been flipped to "stop" so the lollipop man shouted to one of the tarmac gang who gave the car a hard smack on the bonnet with his shovel as it went past. The driver at least had the sense not to stop and argue, as the tarmac guy clearly didn't give a f*** and would likely quite happily have given the driven a smack on the head with the shovel to emphasise the point. There may have been an element of "class war" in the incident, but my mate said it was just about the funniest thing he'd ever seen.
