Problem there is that you reveal the number is live, leaving yourself open for more. The reply can cost upto £10, with no guarantee they'll heed the "Stop".

I'd go with @swee'pea99's suggestion of going through the provider. They have the ability to block it in their system but choose not to.
My contract is with Virgin. They told me they can do nothing as its not illegal. Virgin told me to text STOP.....I did so and got immediate confirmation that "they" had stopped. Not had any since.
Of course.....yours may be different to mine.
A suggestion.....google the name of the scammer and see what others have done. I did.....it is a massive but legal scam.

Orange stopped mine, reported the problem to them and they stopped.

Current setup under BT, I wouldn't trust to sort/stop anything.

Wonder what the position would be if it were a child's phone e.g. your paying the bill but it's your kids phone, sending pornography to minors would be a thorny issue for the provider, especially as they're making money from it. (obviously don't know how explicit the material is or what the boundaries are legally)

Mine were from a (legit) company called Prizehook.....there is record of them getting a 13 year old lad with same scam.....his parents pay the bill. What they do is send a text pretending to be ASDA etc and when you open it you are inadvertantly agreeing to pay £2.50 per text they send......EVEN IF YOU DONT OPEN THEM......BARSTEWARDS!!

Just received a shot of a boob by text. I've read about this but didn't really pay much attention, thinking it would never happen to me. Googling tells me it's a scam and you pay £4.50 just to receive the text. I have blocked the number on my Galaxy, was that the right thing to do? Others say you should text STOP to "opt out" but I'm reluctant to acknowledge the text in any way.

Anybody got any words of wisdom? I can't ask on Singletrack where there are loads of savvy people because right now that site is having a problem with unwanted redirects to dodgy sports websites.
Block the number and just ignore it. Or send them a picture back, maybe of your bike's saddle.

Another thought, if you're registered with the telephone preference service and they are sending unsolicited stuff then technically what they are doing is illegal (again I stand to be corrected), not sure what regulator needs to be informed, Offcom?

I dare say someone would need to bring a test case before some authority or other

I've started getting texts from Ladbrokes on my work iphone since a recent upgrade. I'm pleased it's nothing too dodgy, but mildly annoying just the same. I have attempted to block them but it doesn't seem to make a difference. I'll probably ask IT tomorrow if I remember.

Problem was......they all went into my spam text folder (which I didnt know existed)......so even though I was unaware of getting them they still got paid for each one.

It seems there's a weekly charge as well. Opting out by sending STOP, doesn't stop the weekly charge.

You did not subscribe. Your phone company will have your complete call history so can prove you did not subscribe. Ask your phone company to block them and ask the company to cease and desist.

Of course it's farking illegal to take money from you without your consent! If a phone company tried that with me, I'd phone company, withhold payment, file complaints with the regulators and see if the phone company dared try to take me to court... but then I've no particular reason to think I want a good credit reference any time soon - if I did, I'd probably pay up and then claim it back, first directly and otherwise through the courts.

But as I said......they (Prizehook) claim they sent me the original text with the offer to join thier weekly gambling club (text comcealed to look like an ASDA advert). They say I clicked on the 'agree' button and that they have it doccumented. I would have to take it to court to prove otherwise.

But if you didn't, then it's illegal... and yes, proving such things does sometimes mean going to court, but it's more likely that Virgin or the Phone-paid Services Authority would resolve the complaint before it got that far. Virgin and Prizehook probably rely on most people not fighting it to keep getting money.
