You have some ingenious solutions.
It's been a long time since I did anything with BBs, except take the bike to my LBS and ask them to replace, so I'd have been too wary to try any form of DIY fitting arrangements. And I felt I was committed to the new chainset, so the extra £12 for the BB was worth a try.
I'll see how the current setup goes. The chainset could be moved in-board a mm or so without fouling the chainstay - might be worth it if I find the chainline is too "off".
