Specialized crosstrail tyres

Hi

I have a Specialized crosstrail sport disc. I want to put some better offroad tyres.

The tyres on now are 700x45c

The rims are called alexrims HRD double wall 622x17 6061-t6 29.

Are these true 29 inch rims and I can put any 29 inch tyre on?

Sheldon has all sorts of info here on tyres and wheel sizing.
29er is basically a term used for 700c (ISO designation 622) wheels with moutain bike type tyres on them, giving an outside diameter of 29"

Those rims look to be quite narrow so the tyres you have now are probably the biggest width you could get on them reasonably.
