Why don't the cyclist undertake a protest.

All the cyclists run next to their bikes around the park.

So they will effectively be going faster than 5mph but not actually cycling.

A 5mph limit is essentially a cycle ban.

I can track stand faster than that. I suspect this "limit" is totally unenforceable. Park officials and police totally misinterpreting legislation and abusing their powers. For a start there is no legal requirement to have a speedometer on a bike. How about people walking and running faster than 5mph or even dogs on the loose charging around?

TBH I didn't hear this debate - but if its like any other debate on LBC re cycling I'm guessing it was pretty ill informed.
A couple of years ago Julia Hartley Brewer 'debated' a clip of a cyclist being undertaken in a bus lane by a police car.
There is the Evening Standard article about the video here: http://www.standard.co.uk/news/lond...r-turns-anger-into-a-youtube-hit-8196791.html
It descended into a pretty ill informed debate withion minutes with the host admitting she was clueless about when one is allowed to undertake, if ever. The usual cycle haters rang in. One said he had twisted his windscreen washer jets so he could deliberately squirt cyclists and encouraged others to do so. She laughed and said it was a great idea. I did complain to ofcom about sanctioning crime on a national radio station - last time I checked they said the complaint was still open, but I doubt they'll do anything about it...

The thing is, it is not just about a debate, the police are using radar to inforce this so called 5mph rule.

Can cyclists be booked for speeding?
Cyclists can’t be booked for speeding, but might be fined for ‘cycling furiously’ or ‘riding furiously’ which is an offence under the 1847 Town Police Clauses Act. However, cyclists can be convicted for ‘wanton and furious driving’ under the Offences Against the Person Act 1861 (as amended by the Criminal Justice Act 1948 (c. 58), s. 1(2)) if they cause bodily harm to any person. They are then guilty of a misdemeanour and could, at the discretion of the court, be imprisoned for up to two years.

I used to skate at a nice steady 12 mph. I guess I'd have been stopped.

glad to see riders on shared public routes being stopped for speeding.
parks are for everyone to relax and enjoy without having to worry about highway codes, fast moving vehicles or collisions.
if you want to ride at over 10mph, the you are better sticking to the roads.the speed limits are there for a reason.
