So I am not entirely convinced that the powerlinks are essential and have just been introduced to cater for those who are technically incapable of using a chain splitter properly.

I don't understand your thinking. Powerlinks/Powerlocks/Missing Links, etc are all just alternative - and easier - ways of joining/breaking a chain. They are not 'essential' and it has nothing to do with being technically capable or not. It's just easier, ffs.

Nothing wrong with being lazy if it actually works. Why fanny about unnecessarily with a chain tool when in seconds you can have a powerlink on or off without one? Teapots and leaf tea are lovely, but teabags are a chuffing sight easier.
Yep, that works:thumbsup:

Don't suffer fools gladly (must try harder!)

Not to mention this new-fangled, lazy, unnecessary indexed shifting.

Puzzle game procrastinator!
Sorry, what was the question again ...?

(I got distracted wondering how somebody who is ignoring somebody else knows what they have posted!)

No one here has suggested they are necessary, merely that that are a perfectly acceptable and effective means of joining a chain.
