Back to the question. Star Trek of course. They have invented a Heisenberg Compensator which is pretty tricky stuff by all acounts and trumps the Light Saber widget thingy by a mile :ninja:(sorry about the inapropriate Ninja wacky thing).

Anyone remember the cartoon version of Star Trek? I watched most of them when the BBC showed it in the early 1970's, although I think they only showed the series once in the UK. That had some interesting plot lines.

I always hoped so. I always hoped for a revival...

HitchHikers' Guide, BTW, isn't Sci-fi, it's a religion, and Douglas was our prophet...

There have been attempts to bring Blake's 7 back. It seems very unlikely though.

Talking on that topic Danny John-Jules has been knocking around on tv recently and reckoned Red Dwarf is back soon.

There's a whole new series of Red Dwarf coming. I'm hoping it is going to be better than the Back to Earth mini series, which whilst watchable it was, top of its game it wasn't.

I quite enjoyed both Star Wars and Star Trek when I was younger. I grew up on TNG, TOS and the first 6 Trek films. Similarly I must have watched Wars numerous times. I kind of lost interest in both around the time DS9 came on the scene.

Oddly enough, the revivals of the series intrigue me. I have great hopes for the new Trek films, instantly forgettable the plot of the first one was, it was a fun roller coaster. Similarly, videos like this make me want a new Star Wars film set in a different time to the original series. Oh, and stick around for the end of that video.

But my heart lies with Doctor Who. And once again, it is the new Who, and not the old which steals it, and specifically I prefer Moffat over RTD in terms of running the show. RTD tended to lean towards making every finale EPIC but Moffat only does big when he means it. I loved the understated Christmas special last year for example, though I know it wasn't everyone's cup of tea.

I remember it. They brought in an alien character with a long thin neck, and grey-brown skin iirc. He was actually quite repellant.

The prequel movie Star Trek is on tonight, when young James T Kirk met young Spock etc. It had the potential to be crap but it's actually surprisingly good, all action hokum.

I've just watched the prequel Star Trek film on DVD and in one of the special features blurbs, one of The Guys said the pace of the film was based on .............. yup, you guessed it, the pace of the Star Wars films.

For me (not surprisingly, given my avatar:whistle:) it has to be Trek. It's more realistic (!), grounded in science than Star Wars which was more fairytale fantasy. A lot of Star Wars is based on varoius fables, including King Arthur, but Trek is more about a positive vision of our future which is unique compared to most TV & movie SF (Aliens, Blade Runner, Terminator movies etc) which can be very negative and bleak. It's also about exploring whereas Star Wars was about overcoming oppression. Nothing wrong with that. I saw Star Wars back in 1978 and it was fun, but I thought they should have stopped it at Return of the Jedi. There was no need for prequels as you can fill in the story yourself.

It's worth noting that George Lucas himself admits to taking time off writing SW to watch old Trek reruns on TV (see his biography Skywalking).

However, both Star Wars and Star Trek owe it to this:

Star Wars fans: Check the titles. Now where else have you seen them scrolling?. Star Trek fans: This is a full decade before the USS Enterprise graced the screen. Terrific fifties pulp SF, mad scientists let loose with alien technology, invisible monsters from the mind, psychedelic skies ...what more could you want?.
