Starting a new project..... need some advise please :-)

I have a brand new crank set that I would like to use with this new bike. The problem is that the crank is a triple )with a granny chainring.

I think I can remove the granny chainring - is that right? Now, would I still need a front dreilleur for a triple chainring?

What do you want to remove it for? The bolts will be the thickness of the crank arms and 3 rings.

You probably can just remove the granny ring - they usually bolt on with their own 5 bolts, but unless you're certain you'll never need it I'd leave it on. Some day your knees will thank you for it.
If you do effectively turn it into a double, then a double front mech ought to work.

I know what you mean but to be honest I have the same crankset ( Shimano 105) triple on my other bike and I can't remember the last time I used the granny ring. It used to be very handy but I feel that I can manage without it. Now, this new bike will, hopefully, be lighter so every effort should be made to keep component's weight to the minimum. I could buy a new one and perhaps I should, but I can't afford it atm..... our boiler just die and that is going to take some of the money I had for this project.

Well, if you're going all-out for lightness, I suppose it's a free way of losing a few ounces

Lose it and lock out the mech but be careful to use the same two clicks on the shifter. The amount of cable pulled for the shift from small to middle is different to the amount of cable required to shift from middle to big. Your triple shifter will work perfectly well.

So, a double should be OK then.

Would it make a difference to the length of the BB?

Take a look at it on the bike. If theres an enormous gap betwixt crank and stay then get a shorter bb. If you can be arsed. For the meagre performance advantages of reduced Q factor i cant imagine its worth the expense.

Here is another question that I need an answer for.

Would I be able to run a 105 10 speed shimano crankset together with a 105 rear derailleur, 8 speed chain and a 8 speed cassette?

I have a bike in which I run a 105 9 speed shimano crankset together with a 105 rear derailleur, 8 speed chain and 8 speed cassette and it runs very well, however, I'm wondering if an 8 speed chain might be too wide for a 10 speed crankset.


Any comments will be much appreciated.
