1/2 inch sounds about right. It should be pretty quiet tbh. Are chain, ring and sprocket newish?

1/2 inch seems a bit much to me. are you using tug nuts? and just because it's fixed(?) doesn't mean no oil.

Shouldn't be noisy, are you sure its the transmission? Hows your chain line? Have you got any tight spots in the chain, could cause binding.
