Storm Christian has now developed closed circulation in the Atlantic and is now currently racing across Eastwards at over 80mph under the influence of a powerful Atlantic jetstream.

It is now widely expected that Storm Christian will cause some significant damage to the UK over the next 48 hours. There are three main concerns regarding this system.

The first is the amount of rainfall which Christian will dump across Southern parts of the UK. South-west England can expect up to 75mm of rain (3 Inches) whilst Southern England can expect up to 50mm (2 Inches) of rainfall during Sunday evening and overnight into Monday morning. This is likely to cause local flooding in itself, but add on the rapid leaf fall and this only serves to inflame the situation.

The second is the wind. The strongest of the winds are expected to push across Southern England during the early part of Monday and into the afternoon. Sustained winds of 40-50mph inland and 50-70mph along coastal locations are expected. Gust speeds will increase dramatically during the day and push East along Southern areas. Inland gusts of 60-80mph can be expected across Southern and later Eastern areas.

The third is the compounding effect of trees still in leaf, recent heavy rain with saturated ground and the timing of the system.

Add together all these ingredients and there is the likelihood of local flooding, trees uprooted and falling branches as well as light structural damage. There are also likely to be problems with the travel network due to falling debris and some areas will lose power as trees disrupt power lines.

We don't need to remind you that the weather is a powerful beast. At Metcheck we do enjoy it when the elements all come together, after all it's our passion. But, there are times when the weather flexes its muscles and Christian will do just that. We will keep you updated with the latest developments, but if you have travel plans on Monday then have a think whether it is absolutely necessary.

Just cycled from the in laws back home and the wind has already started to pick up. Had to work hard to maintain 14mph average on the flat. Normally in excess of 18mph so ended up as a good workout for the legs!!

Will be heading to work at 2:15 Monday morning if I cycle ( or an hour later if I drive), for a 4am overtime start. Like a mad-head. Would rather cycle than drive, but this has made me think twice.

I reckon it'll be a commute on Tank the mountain bike tomorrow rather than Korma the road bike. Plus a trip along the back roads rather than the main road will be in order too me thinks; a lot less traffic to contend with, just the weather to put up with

Wind already picking up here in Salisbury. Just had quite an interesting ride lugging 30kg of Hotmax back from the gardening centre in it. Perfect tailwind to work tommorow tho!

Judging from the weather forecast, on Mondays ride in to work I should set a new record.....slowest or quickest though? The holy grail is to do a sub 30 minute commute on the way home. Please let it be a tailwind oh mighty JesusAllahBuddha.

If there's a storm, you'll probably have to filter gingerly past loads of fuming motorists.

Yesterday was enough for me - struggling up Stamford Hill with a gusting headwind that picked up a black carrier bag and whacked it squarely around the left side of my face. If you live around the area I was the cyclist fighting a plastic bag whilst swearing incoherently at the heavens.

Well, I fixed my car today.

Then I took it to the pub and left it there, so I have to cycle tomorrow whatever

Bit blustery on way in but nothing abnormal. Seem to have missed all the fun!

Had this on the cycle path to contend with tho:
