It's another one of those occasions that reminds me of the scene in The Kraken Wakes, when London is flooded by the rising Thames, a very evocative bit of writing.

The 1953 floods were caused by low pressure and strong winds that prevented the ebb through the Pentland Firth. Years ago I met an old salt who claimed to have warned the police that 'the tide hadn't gone out' but they told him to go away. Next high tide was reinforced by the winds and augmented by the water that had failed to leave the North Sea resulting in the severe flooding. So even tho' this HW has passed, the next one needs watching especially if the high winds continue.
