I would hazard a guess at an archaeological dig site.

The general methodical pattern is a good one for covering a lot of ground, and you can see where some trenches have been extended into the neighbouring one - presumably something of interest was uncovered there.

Edit:
it's just down the road from me... quite a nice ride out to there on the A137

There's one near the top that seems to be in process, with a large excavator. So would they use the excavator as a first 'broad brush' until they find something interesting, then revert to the 'trowels and toothbrushes', which is my mental image of how archaeologists dig?

Yep, from my experience of watching time team that'd be pretty much right.

They would sweep the top layer of earth away with an earth moving machine of some sort - just the top bit, they usually know roughly how far down they'll need to dig.
Then they send in the west country chap on his hands and knees to clear out the delicate stuff with a trowel and toothbrush, as you say.

Blimey, that's round the corner from me - the building you can see is a lorry depot and just up the road is the fantastically-named "Gnome Magic" tourist attraction (which I haven't yet visited).

Have to say, I've never seen any evidence of archaeological things going on and I cycle down Wick Lane a lot. I shall have to take a quick look next time, but the Google Earth pics of my house are at least three years old so I guess it could all have been finished with.

Bearing in mind the possibility of-over chilling the ground and freezing the pipes I wonder if they are for a wide spread of geothermal collectors? My theory falls down though when you see that they are not connected up.
