Reminds me of Neuf-Brisach, in France, just over the border from Breisach, in Germany. The French were told they had to let Germany (Then the Holy Roman Empire) have the original Breisach in the Treaty of Ryswick... in 1697.

Incidentally, both towns are worth a visit: The German one is an old city surrounding a castle on a high hill in the plain, and the French one is an almost perfect star fortress.

I think we stopped there on our way to the Dolomites on the motorbike. I casually looked at the map for a place we might stay an there was a historic-site symbol by the town so I thought it might be reasonably pleasant. Turned out to be on of the most important Vauban star-forts. In fact the whole town is a star fort. Had I done a bit more homework I'd have made a point of visiting rather than merely stumbling across it
