how do you do it and have enough faith to go cycling when there is about 5k's worth of glass and electronics in it

my issue is it falling off, bugger all will help if it falls off (bar a peli and mine is super heavy). Everythings nicely insured

If you're carrying a load that valuable, then you should be driving!
Otherwise bubble wrap and bungee cords should do the job.

I thought 'bungee cords' was too obvious an answer. Maybe not.

I'm a photographer and my kit is working 'tools' so I'm quite desensitised to the abuse it gets.
I did think of bungee cords but are they reliable enough?
I'd use more than one and get decent quality cords - but if they are in good condition there's very little risk of them breaking. There's probably more risk of the bag working it's way out from the grip of the cords - so if you can find away of wrapping them round a handle or whatever then so much the better. You can also get sort of stretchy nets.

that does look nicejim , but in all honesty I don't really want to spend even more on luggage right now when I'm saving for a decent bike to put it on
will try with some bungies (I'm sure they'll be a couplea quid in the shop in town) and see what its like, if not they'll be handy for my tripod.

Here is an idea for you to transport large items.
I made this pannier quite cheaply.
If you have a decent sized rucksack already then it can be done for next to nothing.

rucksack 25 litre from tesco is what i used, i think it was between £8 to £10
coat hooks [4 of] from asda £3
piece of wood free, found it on the road side
4 bolts £1- [wilkinsons].
This design is rock solid and will carry a lot of weight, i have 25 lbs of items in it, in a couple of the photos.It can carry more.
I made some small cuts in the material to feed the coat hooks through, but you can see it can all be converted back easily to a proper rucksack.The straps are still there.And the piece of wood can be removed again.
