Whatever this means, it sounds like Strava have upset folk yet again 🙄

What it means is that third party apps will no longer be able to display data relating to you to anybody but you.

So RideWithGPS, if you have it connected, will not be able to show your rides to anybody else, only to you. The same for any other app.

I could understand Strava not sharing your data if you haven't consented to it but you have to authorise the sharing of the data so where's the issue ?

I think what they are doing is stopping sharing data altogether and dropping the authorisation part which seems to be the issue. DC Rainmaker suggests it'll affect Veloviewer and other 3rd party apps and coaches too.

No, they are not stopping sharing data at all. They are just saying that any data that is shared can only be shown to you.

Where it is going to hit other apps worst though is not even mentioned in their email, but is where they are not allowing analytical use of the data. So no heatmaps of where other riders have been most or anything similar.

With Veloviewer, you will still have tiles that you have comleted, but you won't be able to conmare with anybody else unless the data has come from somewhere other than Strava.

I think most of the other apps that don't already have it will pretty soon deliver integration with Wahoo, Garmin, Hammerhead etc. And will then take data direct from those services rather than from Strava. Some already do, such as RideWithGps and Komoot.

RWGPS is not a great example. I sync my data to RWGPS from Garmin Connect. Never goes anywhere near Strava so is entirely unaffected.

The bigger change seems to be the ban on downstream apps applying "AI, ML or similar" (ie doing anything at all useful) to data originating from Strava which will bugger up their business completely unless they have an alternate hub (like Garmin Connect or Wahoo whatever) to relay user data.

Doesn't bother me as I don't use Strava. But interesting nonetheless.

My family post they walked the dog a mile... FFS. And that mile took 40 minutes... that is not a dog. it's a slug.

I dunno
a human walks in straight lines

a dog walk in the lines defines by where a squirrel might have gone
or may be a rabbit
and there might have been a mouse
and then Daddy was too far ahead
and then there was that potentially viscous schitzu that might have savaged us

but then I was only a Alsatian (German Shepard Dog) so I did what I could and warned him
and then there was that possible fox that had to be checked out
and then I had to get back across the stream which was difficult

so maybe I went a bit further than Daddy

but I was only doing it to protect him

anyway - do I get a biscuit????????

Given that I'd guess (could be wrong) that the majority of Strava's data is itself second-hand obtained from Garmin Connect, Wahoo cloud thingy, Hammerhead, Fitbit etc this raises an obvious question .... What if Garmin, Wahoo etc applied the same downstream restrictions? No Strava heatmaps, leaderboards, annoying AI ride summaries etc for data gathered via our platforms.

Of course it wouldn't happen because it would be throwing away a competitive advantage (our GPS supports Strava) but I'm sure the people at Garmin must be tempted. After all, over the years Connect has matured a lot.

Life was so much simpler when we plugged a cable into the GPS, pulled off some files and decided what to do with them.
