Hi

I'm contemplating getting some faster road tyres for my Specialised Tricross Sport which I bought last year. The Specialized Borough Pro CX tyres which came with it are good for the winter months but I'd like something a bit lighter and quicker for the summer.

Does anyone have any recommendations as to which tyres I could go for? And do I need to invest in some new wheels?

Many thanks

Andrew

What width are your existing rims/tyres. You'll want to get something a bit slicker and probably a bit narrower but the rim width will determine how much you can go narrower by. If you want to go narrower than your rims allow you'll need to get new wheels or if just want new bling ;-)

The Sport comes with Mavic CXP22s, which should, apparently, take fairly narrow rubber.

Standard Borough Pro tyres are 700x32c.

What sort of surfaces do you ride, wilko?

I've got the 2010 model so I've got the Alex ACE-19 rims.

I cycle pretty much exclusively on the road - although the roads near where I live are of varying quality!

I assume that ACE-19 means their 19mm wide, like my Mavic A319's, for the summer I fitted a pair of 28c Continental GP 4 Seasons, light, good protection and apparently very good in the rain, although not had any decent rain since I started using them six weeks ago.

Use Bontrager Race Lite Hardcase Tyres on my both of my Tricross's (long story).

700x28's on the commuter with mudguards and 700x25 on the Sunday best.

The wheels that come with the bike are fine for general purpose use but I found them a little heavy on longer rides, so I purchased a second hand pair Specialized Roval Pave SL Wheel's that came off a Tricross Comp 09 via fleebay for the Sunday bike. On the commuter I use the stock wheels and they are fine.

I've googled a few sites that say the 19mm is the exterior width the interior width is 17mm (unfortunately I cant find them on the manufactures site to confirm) if thats right they'll comfortably go down to 25mm but the suggested 28mm GP 4 seasons are a good and although mine have been narrower 23mm and 25mm they've been very good in the wet. I've just took of my last one which got 3000 miles on the front and 4800 miles on the rear, no ptures, it still look OK but I'm planning a big ride on the weekend. My rear before that got 3500miles before getting 3p'ture in a row then it was replaced. This time unfortunately finances have dictated replacing it with a cheaper wired gran prix or it would have been a 4 season again.
