With regards to battery charge, would something like this (which is quite small) not help. I assume it could remain connected during the ride.

Nice idea magnatom... not sure I need it to the tune of £39.99, but thanks for the idea anyway!

It's something I'm thinking about and would be considerably cheaper than buying a dedicated GPS tracker. There are probably cheaper power packs around, as this one has quite a large capacity.

I've 'mapped' 2 rides with it (plus a few dog walks) and found that one of my bike 'puters underestimates a bit, and one overestimates a bit...

Cheers Fnaar !

My phone automatically locks on to my WiFi when I come in range, and I no doubt it will when I set my folks settings in.

The GPS can be turned off, then it will try and use phone masts / WiFi to lock on (but not as accurate). I've not turned it off yet as I'm still playing with the thing - may leave it on for tomorrow's commute.

Fnaar, as it's usually the GPS that uses all the juice on mobile devices, can you turn it off to improve the battery life?
yeah, I turn gps off of not using. The apps that need it turn it on when opened. Certainly improves batt juice usage, as you say. Tried Sky Map last night... cool!

Another app I'd recommend is called Toggle Settings. Sits in notification area and makes it easy to. .. er ... toggle your settings. Good though, for turning gps wifi etc on off as needed. Also sound, brightness bluetooth and so on.

Been playing - turned My Tracks on, took the long 19 mile route home on the fixed. 1100 feet of climbing, max gradient 1 in 9.... It mapped the route exactly.

That's about 37 miles on the fixed today.....

I've gone and bought the charger I linked. I really want to track some of my training runs and the Trossachs Ton in June, so this should give me enough power to do it with the phone, hopefully.

Another two apps... totally pointless, except if you want to pretend that your phone is broken.

1) Screen Crack... makes it look like your screen is cracked
2) Steamy Window... makes it look like your phone has condensation on the inside of the screen

While I'm on here, taking my mind off the work I ought to be getting on with, here's a list of the apps I have that I've got from the market (all freebies)

My Tracks (the GPS thing)
My Maps (see maps/tracks you've saved in Google maps)
Stopwatch
Bubble (spirit level)
Note pad (shopping lists, take-away orders, etc)
What's On (TV guide)
Beeb Player (BBC tv progs)
Loot (cash tracker... not used it yet)
ConvertDroid (convert weights, measures, distances etc)
Sky Map (stars, planets etc... well cool, this one)

(and for the nippers to fart around with...)
DeskBell (a bell, makes a sound like the ones you use in shops to get attention)
Screen Crack (mentioned above)
Steamy Window (mentioned above)
Labyrinth Lite (metal ball, wooden maze puzzle)
Connect 4
Speaking Pad (speaks out what you type in)
Slide Puzzle
Graffi (drawing, colouring etc)

any other App recommendations?

Wow thats quite a few apps!

At the moment I've got

Astrid (a to do list)
Cardio trainer (a tracker I was trying out)
My Tracks
Nav4All (free navigation software - ok'ish but I'd prefer amazegps)
Power Manager
ShopSavvy (scan a bar code and find it cheaper!)
Skymap (very cool!)
Wikitude (another cool app that adds wikipedia labels to things that you look at through your camera. Would be great when out on bike rides)

Sky map is pretty cool. I know a bit about astronomy anyway and when I was at Uni it was easy to impress girls with knowledge of the stars, they found it romantic!

Sky map just allows you to cheat!

What would make it better, perfect even for my uses, would be ...
1. Decent sound on the vid
2. Zoom and flash on the camera
3. FM radio

Apart from those, it's the business!
