Rooting the phoneis tempting, would love to have apps on the SD card insted, but I'm just not brave enough/techy enough. Most of the instructions I've seen on how to do it are step-by-step and potentially followable, but ... I wouldn't know what to do if it all went wrong
I'm on T-mobile, with a G1... meant to be getting the Donut update soon, I think... anyone got it?

I need my phone too much to be rooting it. However, I can see the attraction.

No donut yet, but it is supposed to be imminent.

t-mob's meant to be from 12th Oct, but no sign as yet...

Have you tried forcing an update? Go to settings, about phone and go to system updates. It might or might not work.

I rooted it recently and it was like grease lightning, only problem after a few days I lost my accelerometer so panicked and reverted back to send it for repair however it worked again so must have been a bug.

1.6 I hear is being rolled out around 18th Oct or thereabouts!

I rooted mine a long time ago, it's handy for a couple of things (task manager, tethering) and has had no impact on its actual capability as a phone. Hven't had the spare time forthe 16. upgrade yet, though

I lost the accelerometer in an unrelated accident after installing some light sabre game and waving it around too vigorously, but a factory reset sorted that out

;)
There's an app on the market somewhere (can't remember the name) which claims to measure the height of things... you have to drop the phone in order to get a reading ;)

Donut arrived at midnight last night, OTA. Yet to explore what it can do, but will report anything interesting here!

As far as I can work out, it boils down to: (from user point of view... prob more to it if you are a developer)

search... now quick search, finds not only internet links, but any contacts or other applications/docs with associated criteria. Might be useful, not sure yet.
text to speech (inlcudes a download of just under 4MB... not sure how this gets used yet... can't get it to read out my emails or texts...
battery indicator...what's drinking your juice...
camera/camcorder/gallery integration and quicker camera.... fine, but the vid cam was/appears to still be fairly pants with regard to voume (ie can't hear much, even when turned right up) and the camera still doesn't have a flash... disappointed there...
market...redesigned (I preferred it with black, rather than the now garish white)

and ...er that's it... anything else I've not spotted?

I'd be quite surprised (pleasantly so) if a software update could add a flash to the camera ;-)

Just installed the update (overwriting my previous cyanogen rom, which I wasn't 100% happy with) and the most noticeable change so far is that I can only get root access from an attached computer, not directly on the device
