If you're right handed, that's the one that needs to be on the bars, not the one reaching for the bottle.

I'm right handed, and I use my right hand to reach for the bottle while keeping my left hand on the bars.

Because your "best" hand needs to be in control of the bike, not the bottle.

I can remember many, many years ago they used to have one or two bottles on the front on the handle bar haven't seen them for years... with a tube coming out of the top so you could drink from it with both hands on the handle bars.

Just an update..
I'm right handed so I tried right hand holding the bars and left hand getting the bottle and thats loads better so thats the way it is for me..

Left handed me I grab bottle with the right, whilst steering with the left.

Me too!

Still never got particularly fluid at replacing the bottle.
