my daughter who is now at university and over 18 is therefore no longer included in our CTC Household Membership. She's not interested in the CTC magazine or other benefits but I'd feel slightly more comfortable if she was covered by third party liability insurance. I could add her as a student CTC member for twenty-something quid. Or apparently, given that we are also Tandem Club members, I could add her to that membership for fifty pence. She would then get third party insurance with a limit of £2M but when on any bike, not just a tandem and not just when with us. Anyone see a catch?

Otherwise, I think LCC 3rd party cover is a tenner from memory...

£9.50, £5m cover

Full student membership is £19

That would involve lending support to the LCC though.
Is that any worse than lending support to the organisation that CTC has now become, though? I may need guidance, I confess I'm not really up on the relative sins off he different organisations....

One thought - as your daughter is only 18 and a student, does she actually have money to be worth suing ?
In the astronomically unlikely event of someone suing for £100k or whatever won't she just declare bankrupcy and they'll get nowt ?
Hence no-one will sue, so why insure ?

I'm being perfectly serious by the way.

If she has a trust fund or whatever, or gets her granny's house when she becomes 21 the fair enough

And when has that happened in the whole history of cycling - I'm talking the serious injury situation here rather than a wing mirror ?
And do you have third party pedestrian insurance - what if you bump into someone and accidentally push them under a bus ? Who pays for that ?A friend of a friend accidentally pushed over an elderly gentleman in a tea shop who then sadly died, so it's not a stupid scenario

Home insurance policies can include third party cover (I have legal cover, don't know if that includes it)

Didn't someone post on here my that long ago that he was being sued by a ped he hit?

If you own a home, then 3rd party cover isn't a silly thing, but again, why cycling, rather than general everyday stuff? (I appreciate your example is general purpose). And if you pay £10 or £20 for 3rd party cover for each individual thing you partake in, pretty soon, you'll be broke. Need to think it through as to risk and reward (or risk of significant loss)

It's a bit more complicated than that...
Home insurance usually includes 3rd party insurance, but you'll need to read the policy to find out whether it includes children at university.

CTC and so on insurance gives higher limits of cover than standard household cover, and should also get you quicker access to specialist legal advice if you're sued than the generalist you'll probably get through a standard household policy.

(Off topic, but I suspect that the CTC's reorganisation and rebranding will be the salvation of an organisation that needs to exist. I may yet need to eat my expanded polystyrene hat.)

A friend received 30k damages following a fractured hip caused by a fellow cyclist with ctc Insurance

the best reason for having third party insurance is that, in the event that you injure somebody, it gives them a means of redress. In other words the insurance is really for your victim!

That said....£2M isn't that large a sum. For the amount of the premium £10M would be a wiser (and more considerate) option. From memory the CTC policy has a £10M limit. This is available via an affiliate club for a modest sum.
