They have the 'Grande' pods which are often too much for me.
Other than that it seems to be all Espresso type drinksis there anything in between?
Yes, I can simply pour some of the 'Grande" away which I sometimes resort to.

Add a little hot water to the Espresso types?

I think they make an Americano pod?

Just add water. We have a Dolce Gusto and they do expresso and various americano blends but you can just add water to an expresso blend if needed. Do you not select cup size on the unit

Tassimo are pretty terrible: bulky pods and the barcode restriction means there's limited choice. The refillable pod shells aren't widely available in the UK yet. At least there's now pod recycling take-home bags and drop-off bins at many Asda and Morrisons.

I hate Nestlé over the baby milk, but now that 15-bar Dolce Gusto machines are cheaper than 3-bar Bosch Tassimo ones in several shops, there seems no good reason to fall for the Tassimo lock-in. Even the financial cost of replacing the machine can be recovered fairly quickly by the cheaper pods, or even faster if you use refillables, but if you're going to handle loose coffee then I'd go analogue and just use Hario v60 filter or a Moka pot.

No, Tassimo cup size is set by the barcode on the pod. This can mean you start the day with a lovely morning coffee fountain if the holiday rental has a Tassimo and someone has put an unused pod back into the wrong container!

The posher Dolce Gusto machines work of capsule codes as well, be aware DG are currently rolling out new biodegradable pods in various countries. Hasn't hit the UK yet, sadly given it was the birthplace of world Dolce Gusto production to start with. Plenty of copy capsules for DG and also fill your own as well. Personally I prefer the nespresso vertuo capsules. I do have both machines though, 1 at work and 1at home. Having spent 10yrs working for DG i can honestly say its better than tassimo. Lavazza used to do
a system with coffee liquor in plastic type sleeves that was good, I've onlyseen the pod types recently though. PS no longer work for them.

Good to read DG are going biodegradable. I expect it'll get here too eventually, as long as the politicians don't get involved.

Not good to read that DG are introducing capsule codes. Might they go the same "enshootification" (family-friendly misquote of Cory Doctorow) way as Tassimo so the posher machines won't work with pods that don't have the licensed control codes? You can see on the link that @Binky posted that Tassimo pods are about 5p/cup dearer, thanks to the "Tassimo barcode tax"

The codes have been around for years in some markets, Japan was the first i think from memory. If you look on top of DG capsules you'll see bars these are for the posher automatic machines. The push to change is to become more environmentally responsible, so mainly people power to change rather than politicians. Sadly suspect it will mean new machines but I'm out of the loop now so dont know.

But surely if you want to eco friendly then a filter would be betters
or one fo those things where you push the grating down after a few minutes

pods - by their very nature - are always bad eco wise just because of manufacturing costs and stuff

or is it the appearance of being eco that matters rather than the actual reality??

It is, but I'm not always at home and can't always take a decent filter with me. Not sure who you were asking, but I suspect some others have that reason for using pods sometimes.

Last resort. I think the extra difficulty cleaning those properly might make them less eco than a filter.

Not always. The paper pods like ESE and Saeco are completely compostable. I don't remember if the bags they come in are recyclable, as it's been some time since I used one. The various plastic/foil pods seem to have pushed them out.

That's a false dilemma. The appearance doesn't matter, but the reality will always be imperfect.
