Adolf Loos was an architect who wrote a book "Ornament and Crime" that sets out his view that buildings should serve a utilitarian purpose before or instead of being dressed up. He visited prisons and from it drew the impression that "The modern person who tattoos himself is either a criminal or a degenerate" and used this to justify his thoughts on buildings. The significant word in that quote is 'modern' because times change and what was once the province of sailors (go ashore get laid, get drunk get a tattoo) or gypsies or convicts no longer applies.I am afraid though that, being the tatless son of a much decorated sailor this fashion may be a date stamp.
I have an opinion but it's none of my business anyway. I do think seeing beautiful young women in very feminine sleeveless tops or dresses displaying big masculin (in my opinion) tattoos on their shoulders and biceps makes them unattractive, but then I'm probably just as unattractive to them.My only comment on the matter is how its odd that over 50% of voters went for 'its up to you luv' but that its filled 9 pages of posts in 2 days. It obviously creates strong feelings amongst those with an opinion, yet most of us dont have an opinion.
Tattoos are just another kind of self-adornment; I'd rather look a person in the eye and establish a person-to-person rapport with them than have them staring at my tattoos or facial ironmongery and be thinking I was either a real cool dude or some kind of twat.
Establishing a rapport and conveying sincerity and trustworthiness are especially important in my job, which consists of selling my products in countries where people are accustomed to being cheated and robbed. I even wear anti-glare frameless glasses so that my eyes are more visible. Tattoos and facial ironmongery would probably have prevented me getting the job, to be honest, as they don't go down very well with Africans.
Reminds me of the one time I wore (having been given) a joke T-shirt. I gave up after a morning because I couldn't get comfortable with walking down the road and having a stream of people staring at my chest....and laughing.I'd rather look a person in the eye and establish a person-to-person rapport with them than have them staring at my tattoos or facial ironmongery and be thinking I was either a real cool dude or some kind of twat.
So to turn that around if you found out that one of your customers who you built a rapport with and trusted was covered in tattoo's would that change the way you treated them ?

Needles are inevitable - there's no other way to give blood, I'm afraid. How long do you have to wait, after having a tat, to be allowed to give blood? It's one reason why I don't want someone to poke me with a needle.
