There are two ways:
1) very neatly, matching all the rows as you go, edge to edge, having blocked and pressed all the pieces
and
2) any old how, with tacking stitches, and with the pieces unpressed and curled up. If its really bad, you can wear the thing inside out and claim the seams are a fashion feature....
I finished the 8 foot scarf for my sister last night. Annoyingly, half way along, I thought of something fancy I could have done at each end, but as I'd already knitted the beginning I couldn't. Next time....
