Dinah was buried yesterday in the style of a barbarian princess. She has many grave goods and will no doubt confuse the crew of Time Team 2209 should they dig her up. We're currently trying to find a suitable plant or shrub to mark her grave. Preferably something that will be in flower or at least be visually appealing at this time of year. Any ideas?

Forsythia - the shrub with yellow flowers but no leaves at this time, flowers are out now in York (you'll be a bit ahead down there).

And snowdrops round the base of the shrub.

I'm glad you've given her plenty of grave goods. I'm all for confusing archaeologists (as long as it's not me!)

I really ought to get on with some work. And then it'll be a fun ride back to the flat later, in the snow...

I'm just about to make a cuppa, so I'll raise that too....

I remember I had a book when I was a kid, full of things to do and make, throughout the year (Xmas decorations, easter chicks from pom poms, iced tea for the summer etc) and each month featured a type of pet, and what you needed to think about if you were going to have one. For hampsters etc it said at the end "hampsters don't live very long, so when it dies, remember it with love, and then get a new one to love too" or something to that effect. I always thought that was a very gentle, sensible and grown up attitude for a child's book to have.

Will you get another, in time? It's an opportunity to offer a loving home to a cat who needs it...

Dinah found us, as did the cat we had before. I'm hoping that another one finds us, otherwise we're going to come back from the Abandoned Cat Shop with armfuls of the things...

Forsythia. Nice idea but she's at the end of a forsythia hedge, so it would be a bit lost. Snowdrops sound nice though.

Morning all!

Another day confined to quarters for me, fighting off the lurgy...:B)
..seems to be on the wane though, and I should be OK tomorrow, probably just in time to greet the slush, having missed out on all the snowball fights, bah!

Tea for anyone? Or hot blackcurrant?

How about different bulbs mixed, so that you get snowdrops at about this time, and then something right the way into summer? I'm not sure of the order, but crocus, narcissus, fritillaries, tulips etc...

Cornus has nice red stems in winter (not sure if they are brightest now, or earlier though)

I'm sure another cat will find you, one way or another. They have a habit of finding a cusy home. I know one who marched into a house of female undergrads and ended up staying, and then moving with them (to a house where pets were forbidden, they had to hide her in the laundry baskey when the landlord came round), and then stayed with one of them when the group split up, and they are still together, and the cat is now living a very comfortable life in a loving home.

Heh-heh, my Sister-(kinda)in-law had a similar thing happen to her. A very bedraggled looking dog turned up on their doorstep - it clearly knew they were a household of veterinary students!
They swept up the little bundle of wretchedness, and took her down to the university vet school, where they had to shave off all her matted coat (said dog immediately acquiring the name "Pinky") and generally tending to her needs.
S(k)IL was firmly of the opinion that the dog should go to the local dogs' home, but the rest of her housemates did the old "Oh don't worry, we'll do all the looking after her, take her walkies etc etc..", and Pinky moved in with them.
As time passed, the various students completed their studies and moved away, until the household comprised just the two - S(k)IL and Pinky!

I just brushed my hair out of my face, and dislodged a crumb of bread roll. How the heck did that get there? I know I've just had lunch, but...

When we last did an outreach session at the department, one girl (these are 15/16 year olds) asked what the mounted skeleton in the lab was. A horse, we said, well, a pony actually. "What's a pony?" she said.;)

We explained that it was a horse under a certain height (14 and a half hands, fact fans), and she said she was getting mixed up with unicorns....
