I've never understood the narwahl connection as there don't seem to be any aquatic unicorn stories, as far as I know?

I assume it is a case of narwhal tusks being traded further and further from their source, and the information about what they are becoming subject to a sort of Chinese Whispers. By the time the tuck reaches the middle of France for example, having been through several sets of hands, no one knows what it really is. (esp if you have a merchant along the way with a talent for sales patter and an imagination...)

No, not necessarily. See the Cluny tapestries:

I seem to remember that unicorns could only be captured by a maiden, which the unicorn would trust and wander up to...

See the beard, as mentioned by our resident expert...
Can I also point out that perspective hadn't been invented back when that tapestry was stitched and the rabbit appears to be the same size as a hamster.

Narwhal tusks are heeyoooge, about 6' long. You couldn't look at one of them and think that the creature that grew it was the size of a small goat.

Night train, if you need a Research Assistant for your Thesis, I would be happy to do the required research in Austria, Switzerland and Germany, just let me know. :hyper:

I know a little bit about trains , lots about buying tickets and timetables, and routes and things, and can blend in well with the locals.

You could if perspective hadn't been invented yet...

(although, it had - Roman and Greek Art is often alright). Why it was lost, I don't know.

Online pic 'n' mix? Interesting. You'd have to have a screen where you could just click on individual sweets, as if you were picking them. That would be fun! (Although I'm not generally keen on the kind of sweets you get - I'm more a chocolate bar person...)

Now, tea....

Wotcha all...
After a couple of days propping up the sofa, I've recovered from the lurgy and am well enough to be back in work. Whoop-de-doop.
To compound my displeasure, my regular lunchtime darts opponent is skiving.

Tea anyone?

Yes, please, I'm just finishing my cupasoup, so I'll want tea with my biscuit.

Glad to hear you're over the lurgy...

So really they're just goats with only one horn?

Yeah, pretty much...

Of course, that could be the source of the whole idea. Any horned animal may have a mutation leading to odd or missing horns.

Off the subject of Unicorns for a moment...

Spoke to my sister last night, they've had real proper snow down in Winchester, so I asked how Oli reacted. Apparently she took him to the park and he kept saying "park!" - as if he didn't recognise they were there already. All he wanted to do was go on the swings. I guess he's a bit young - it's like Christmas, until you're old enough to understand that it ought to be fun, it's just another day.
