Cheers, Dco!

That's the kind of incentive I like!

Well, if we're going to be exact, *counts on fingers*
2 cafes, about half a dozen pubs and various shops and restaurants.
Stevenage was built in a hole. Every way out involves a bit of a climb, even if it's only up and over the A1.

Sounds a bit like Sheffield...

Every time friends come to visit: "You live up a bloody great big hill!"

Response: "Everwhere in Sheffield's up a bloody great big hill!"

Oh, our hills aren't in the same league as Sheffield. Seriously, a hill that goes up for half a mile of one in ten would be a really big one for round here.

After 10 years living here, I've pretty much got used to it.

On t'other had, my girlfriend moved over from Manchester last year, and she's still in the occasional state of shock.

Manchester has that effect on people. Has she tried trauma counseling?

I went there twice , Didsbury in fact , which I believe is an upmarket part of Manchester? It rained on both occasions, which just reinforced my soft Southern perception that it always rains in that part of the country. Something to do with the Pennines/clouds/prevailing wind, IIRC from my Geography lessons.

My last encounter with Manchester was at an OU summer school. Electronic engineering, as I recall.
I was walking down the road when I got accosted by a tartily-dressed Manc lass, who asked me if I was 'looking for business'
Gulp.
I replied that I was looking for the Lass O' Gowrie - a rather good brew pub. Probably the best reply I could have made.

I'd have probably ended the evening unconscious with no money either way, but at least I didn't get an embarrassing and hard-to-explain rash...

Good pub that one.

If anyone's ever in that neck of the woods, I highly recommend the Marble Brewing Company's "Ginger Marble".

No offense to your partner, but I have no intention of going to Manchester ever again. Maybe UMIST is just in a really iffy bit, but it didn't warm the cockles of my heart.
Now Sheffield, OTOH, I do like. Had a few good evenings in the Frog and Parrot drinking some incredibly lethal beer - Roger and Out? And an excellent Indian a few doors up from it.

And that is why it's so big and important now, because the damp conditions were ideal for cotton and wool spinning (too dry and the fibres snap easily). Hence Manchester's (and Lancashire's generally) huge Victorian wealth.

I was there for a week (also OU at UMIST) and it did rain every day. Mostly just a shower, but yes, rain every day.

Ok Doc, I can get up a hill for a cafe, no trouble! And thanks, I try that line on my Mum. "No, It's fine, that guy off the interent, he's been vouched for by some other woman off the internet". Maybe not...

Nah, probs.

I still get wobbly legs thinking of that climb thru Totley to Owler Bar!

I think "we" would like to go there.

I shall be taking a short break in Bowness on Windermere later this month.
The hotel is 300 metres from the Boat Landing, to get to Ambleside or to go south to Lakeside. Nearby is the Beatrix Potter museum, including the Tailor Of Gloucester Tea Room.
