So, what's the difference between a teacake, a barm, a muffin and a roll?
They all seem to be the same sort of bread when they have a bacon filling.:hungry:

I think a teacake in the current context is the chocolate and marshmallow biscuit thing made by Tunnocks. To me, it's one of them, or it's a thing with raisins in, that you toast.

A barm and a roll are pretty much the same, just in different parts of the country, but a muffin is different - more solidly bready, with that rough sort of exterior. At least that's an English muffin - an American one is a big fairy cake usually with bits in.

(We were only discussing the muffin/fairy cake/cupcake/bun difference at work the other day....)

Just for you Arch, this is part of the e-mail received from the Scrapstore today:

Glittery Greetings Dear Scrapsters!

Tedious we know, but we’ve had ANOTHER fabulous week of scrumping , swapping and unearthing of stashed goodies and it’s all ready and waiting for you to feast your twinkly eyes upon.

Last Friday (as seen on youtube) we met up with a dozen other scrapstores at Sixways for a megafantabulosa swap of huge proportions! With the utmost of consideration for all things Health and Safety, we clambered over mountains of goodies to pick out the best stuff for you guys. We’ve managed to get a load of loveliness, including new, never seen before stuff as well as the return of some old faves, like the flip off lids, aka tiddlywink type discs, in a rainbow of colours.

We’ve also unearthed and dusted down our secret crimbo stash, so it’ll be glittertastic next time you pass by.

We make no excuses, the list is long. If it’s too long, stop reading and come and have a look instead. We’re confident you’ll not be disappointed! Here goes...

Flip off lids aka tiddlywinkish discs aka lids that say ‘flip off’ on them

Black fake fur

Paint roller brush sleeves in many sizes and textures. Great for making hungry caterpillars with a fluffy twist

Hubbabubba clam shells in neon colours. Kind of like pacman but better

Netting off cuts, mainly ribbon width lengths but also some huge bits of white, perfect for the eco bride...

Fake but old fashioned looking telephones and telephone outers

Pink foam shapes

Mounting board off cuts

Translucent red pvc off cuts

Rupert the Bear stickers

White theatre drapes (tell your drama friends). They are the hugest most mammoth pieces of white fabric we’ve ever seen! Ever!

One, larger than life Santa seeking employment

Baubles in a plethora of colours and sizes

Festive hat boxes (for smaller than average heads/hats)

Gold and icicle bordette

Copperfoil and silver foil scrapers with a seasonal twist

Silver and gold paint, card and paper

Glitter spray

There is a load more but we’ll keep some cards close to our chests and reveal all (scrapwise) to those who make the effort to come over and add to the festive cheer.

We promise there’ll be no jingle bells playing, though we can’t promise not to break into song just for the heck of it!

So come all ye faithful and we’ll be pleased to see you when you do!

I will be there tomorrow in my capacity as Library person. They also had some card in silvery or goldy colours, cut and scored to make your own small boxes. The boxes are about 2" in each dimension. So I bought six to use as more ecofriendly "Christmas Crackers". Now I just need to find some very small items to go in them, from around the house, and use up saved bits of ribbons from parcels.

I really should mention this place at St Nicks - I've no idea if there's anything like it here. Presumably it makes enough from the sale of stuff to support itself? I guess you need premises, and staff....(are they all volunteers?)

I love the idea. We on the recycling team sometimes get asked to look out for stuff for craft projects - jam jar lids to make fridge magnets, magazines to cut up etc. It doesn't have to be too time consuming, and it adds interest. And I'm a terrible hoarder of pretty paper scraps and the like.

I know York has a community furniture store, which takes in unwanted stuff and sells it on...

Arch, if you go to the website, www.wre.uk.com and go to links, it takes you to a Directory of Scrapstores. My geography of Yorkshire is not good enough to know which of the ones is nearest to you. They would each have a different format I think.

There is also a short film on the website made by a student which gives an idea of the sort of things there are. The film is in the drop down menu when you click on "About WRE".

Some of them are mainly for younger childrens' craft activities, whereas the Worcester one is for all age groups, and all types of crafts. Some items are sold by the metre, ie fabric, picture frames, very large canvases, etc and they sell paints, glues and various kits.

If you were ever in this area, it would be worth a visit! Please pm me if there is anything else you would like to know. One of the people at Worcester is a trustee of the UK Scrapstores, and might be able to point you in the right direction to get started.

Thanks for the info. Leeds would be about our nearest I think, but it's the sort of thing surely a city like York ought to have. I will look at the website more tonight, at home.

Oh dear, I can see me jumping right in at the deep end here...

I would guess that these things start small and gradually get larger, rather than having a deep end.

Worcester Scrapstore is very close to lots of industrial estates, and gets large quantities of paint, shelves, upholstery fabric, dress fabric (admittedly in plain colours, sort of like material for overalls and uniforms).
They have scrap swaps in areas, so you could perhaps join in one of those. Some where there must be a blog sort of thing that someone has detailed how they got going. About three years ago, the Scrapstore moved into much bigger premises.

They also get scrap bits from boat builders, and tile shops etc. I expect the donors save time and money not having to put it in landfill. You could decide what you wanted to start with, simple crafts, knitting, and patchwork and go from there. Sometimes the general public bring in things they no longer need.

Oi lads, you are safe, this is recycling upcycling not just girly talk!!!!!

I have a pot of extra strong Tea. This evening I shall be dining with my brother and sister-in-law. She seems to take particular delight in disagreeing with me on any subject whatsoever.

I do wonder what she would make of this suggestion:

Their daughter has a degree in History and a Masters in something or other. She is struggling to find a job. There is a temporary job (six months), twenty hours a week, at a local museum. Admittedly it is a fairly junior post, but it would give her experience of working in a museum (which she currently does not have). She would be earning money, but still have time left for searching for work (seeing as how looking for work is very time-consuming). After six months they would presumably be able to give her a reference. If you take on a temporary role, are you committed to the six months do you think?

I am posing this question on this thread because I think the sensible peeps on here, will give me a reply without throwing brick bats at me, if they disagree with my suggestion.

I think if she went for it, she'd be showing a large dollop of sense and humility. I think if she thought it beneath her, she deserves what she gets (or doesn't get). I suspect that nice wishy washy jobs in the arts are likely to get even harder to find in the next few months, when even down to earth necessary jobs are under threat.

I would assume that even taking on a temporary job, you are free to leave when you wish, subject to suitable notice, unless the contract states some unusual penalty clause for leaving - and you'd see your contract before committing, I guess. (and of course, they'd be free to let her go in the case of misconduct or anything) Although applying with the mindset of leaving if something better turned up would be a bad way to approach it. Better I think to think "It's a job, it's better than no job, it could be interesting, and when 5 months is up, I'll have time to look for something new after the contract is up"

Anyway, it could well lead to a permanent job, you never know. Foot in the door and all that, once in the system she might hear of other vacancies coming up.

If sis-in-law sneers, tell her I think it's worth applying, and I have TWO Bachelor degrees and a Masters, and nearly a PhD.

It's all stuff to go on the CV.
If she takes a job for 6 months, and bails after a couple of weeks, she may not get all-that-glowing a reference....

Bring it up Spiecher but with the daughter if you can?

The cuts in the arts etc. are going to be around 35%, any foot in the door/experience/references will be invaluable.

Not only that, it might actually turn out to be a fun and enjoyable job. I went into the recycling job because it came up at just the right time and I needed a job, and I'm really enjoying it, because the people I work with are such fun, and it's actually quite interesting.

(I think on an average day, the team has 3 or 4 degrees, a masters and a post grad certificate between us, not to mention more varied life experience than you can shake a stick at).
