If its anything goes! I think I might be in with a chance.
Just did an unofficial "spin around the block with Liam" at 32.51 mins making a whopping 210 watts (on/off power). And that was just after climbing Mortirolo Alpes Dolomitas. (Not in the results as I stopped just before the line)
I have therefore concluded that average power means little. Its how you use it with that counts with bkool.
If only I'd known this for the bkool summer cup .
Looks like some impressive "on"s you did there. What about drafting?. Were you able to get some additional help there?

going forward whats the answer as there a few of us who ride that style. and I don't want to feel like I'm taken postion away from the stronger riders

Rob, did you watch my ride today? As you can see I was able to reach 40mph on the flat due to the lowered resistance after power reduction. Not steady of course but making a massive difference. 4 or 5% was often 25mph for quite long periods. I wonder if this would work n the velodrome?

When you're practically coasting for a big portion of the time it's not so hard to make decent power spikes. There were no ghosts in the ride and even if there had been I think any drafting would have been near impossible.

This now makes it difficult for the leagues. We might need to have a rule of no on/off power riding.
Well, If I fall behind, I automatically put on more power (sprint if that is what it takes) till I get in a drafting position again, just like I would in a real race. That would be hard to avoid.
Or are we talking about another kind of on/off ?

I think we are talking about another sort of on off power. I am not sure the power figure required for the resistance to be reduced but today I was letting it drop to well under 100 watts and the resistance was reducing a lot. I think you saw my power graph so you can see how much on/off it was. And it tells in the much reduced average power.

Anyway did the Goats ride today. I studied the profile and Alan's stats and after my steady Ventoux ride yesterday I though I could take this by blasting the early flat bits.
It kind of worked other than the following.
By halfway I was blowing hard but still laying down watts.
At 16.6 km I was really hurting and my HRM was obviously lying and pi**ing me of so that went across the room hence my HR disappearing
At about 19.5 km there was a descent that caught me out, my power dropped of as it would, but my legs now felt like jelly and I struggled to keep my power up there after.
I slowly had to trade cadence for watts whilst I watched my average speed drop but the 'time remaining' figure stayed in my favour so I just hung on to the end and welcomed that final coast to the line.

8+ minutes faster! Wow!

I don't know who Dave Brailsford is but I'm guessing he's a bkool bigwig.

Bill, he runs Team Sky and until recently the GB Cycle Accademy and was the force behind the bid to get a UK rider to win the TdF.
He also played a hug part in the success of the UK Track Team and thier success in the Olympics and World Championships.
Mark Cavendish's Worlds title was also one of his campaigns.
'Marginal Gains' was and is one of the Team Sky mantra's and isnow being adopted by a lot of other proffesional teams.

I am not sure how this on off power thing works so will have to read through again. Bit wary about doing so in case I am one of the beneficiaries  I try to maintain a certain consistent power but the reality is I am constantly chasing or trying to evade someone normally Rick so it's always a q of on and then off to recover before the next on.

yes interesting to see it as it happening I could see in the first few miles u where up but I also thought that u weren't pushing it as hard as u could which is even more concerning

I think I'll just go and sit in the corner with my dunce hat on. I must confess to not really watching or reading much about the TDF or any other professional cycling for some reason. Probably because my Mrs has control of the remote 99% of the time. Mind you, if I'd thought it through, there's no way someone of that name would be a somebody in bkool. I hang my head in shame .

:sun:Today is another day at least. Maybe time to try the On/Off power on a goat ride tonight. ;)

Moose,

I've published the 6 rides for the league. Due to the wonders of bkool's sense of time, I'm not sure if it starts today, the 15th or somewhere in between. League closes in mid March to give folks plenty of time to slot in the climbs. I've got some traveling to do, but hopefully there'll be less manual approvals this time around.

The nastiest ride is the Snowbird Hillclimb, which shares 6.5 miles of climbing with Little Cottonwood. The easiest is the climb up Sand Flats Road. The rides are pretty consistently between 8-11 miles. There's ghosts for everything except Sand Flats Road (my legs are rubber tonight, so I aborted that ride). The ghost for Millcreek didn't have proper resistance, so it may be hard to chase down. The other 4 I paced fairly gently. All have minor glitches in the bkool rendering, some of which are fairly amusing.

Enjoy. Or at least try to!

ps. Anyone in Brussels? I'm out there at the end of the month for a conference. Beer time?

Thanks for pulling all this together, it looks like there will be a lot of pain ahead and some difficult challenges.

My league rides always need manual approving for both the Chain and Moose leagues - with a red cross against the weight row.

Is there anything that can be done to avoid the admins the extra work, or is it that my weight is too heavy for Bkool to accommodate

I've read all that has been said about this power on/off technique but still not sure how you guys do it. Do you let your power drop way down and then when Bkool eases off the resistance put the power back on again til Bkool catches up?
