OK, had a few weeks of taking it easy (helping MrsB finish off the leftover Christmas booze and chocolates) and messing with Zwift, so thought i'd have a go at the ride tonight, just my luck it's a mountain top finish ...and all this talk of granny rings has got me even more worried as my bottom gear is 42x28
Can you roll back down a hill on Bkool??

I could warm up into 10 mins, but it seems to sap me of power, I need longer to build up and then I feel alot more prepared after 20mins. May even try 30mins. I was joking with a 60+ rider at our time trial last year, he was on the turbo in the carpark for a good 20 mins. He said it takes him longer to warm up than do the time trail

I actually believe he was right, I need more time

I am sure I read somewhere Wiggins spent 20-30 min on turbo before a time trial.
Surprising how many calories I can burn with 30 min warm up. By the time I have worked through gears and different cadences I have often burnt 150 calories meaning more care is needed with fuel for longer rides like last nights.

CHAINGANG RACE - 7PM TONIGHT

Warm up starts at 7pm - Join in from the 'LIVE' tab only - do not start a league session yourself.
Saler - Cullera. Fort Santuari - 33km

http://www.bkool.com/classification/showIndividualStageClassification/5362

If you cant find it under 'LIVE' do a filter search for 'Saler' or 'Rick'. Race starts at the end of the 10 minute warm up - 7.10pm

Should be a good drafting course though the final hill will blow things apart!!! Should be a very interesting race!! :becool:

In all seriousness, with regards warm up, especially heeding Geoff's warning, I do need to up my game in that area.
I am running the risk of blowing an O-ring the way I am hitting some of these hills.
I told myself I would be more sensible this time round, but looks like I have already binned that notion.
It's not too late for you, feel free to slow down a bit ;)

Similar routine but I find I now need best part of 40 mins to warm up. First 15 mins is really slow before moving up through gears then back down. If I don't do this then given the speed of our race starts I find heart rate goes scary high very quickly. It's been a real benefit to me being able to see impact of different approaches to preparation and racing in bkool.
I might have to try a longer warmup, my HR hits 170 in seconds from the start and steadily rises to the hights of 190 ish for the sprint finish. On some rides I have purposely slowed myself down to keep it ts 160-165, although this tends to be the epic 50km rides.

How old are you Kipster? I am 53.

I know it illogical / counter productive but my mindset has been to avoid too much of a warm up. Partly because of time constraints but also because I didn't want to use energy I could use in the race... Doesnt really make sense when u say it out loud.

So from now on I'm going to try for a longer warm up, but componsate for the energy lost by eating a kebab mid ride. That should do it! :hungry::thumbsup:

Seriously though, this conversation's been a bit of an eye opener for me. I don't come from an organised sport background (unless you count snooker, and no one does). So a warm up from now on it is!

I find very similar to you kipster - my heart rate during the races averages over 170bpm which is very similar to yours by the look of it. I do make a conscious effort to back off a bit if I see it going much over 180 for any length of time as I don't want to blow a gasket! I am surprised how high my heart rate stays during the races considering my resting heart rate is quite low - in the 40s.

I don't get sustained heart rate at anything like that level doing real life riding or running, so I think it's worth keeping an eye on. For comparison I pushed pretty hard yesterday night on a road ride for an hour, and my average HR was "only" 150, and maxed out at 170 - which is around the average for a Bkool race! I never used to use a HR monitor but since using Bkool for racing I think it's a sensible thing to keep an eye on.

I now make an effort to try and do a much longer, gradual warm up than I used to - thanks to Geoff's warnings really. I try and warm up for at least 30 minutes before one of the races if I can

I wake up, stretch, yawn then fart, and that seems to work ok for the whole day.
And yes Rick, might have to give Chaingang a miss tonight, unless I can clamp the wheelchair on somehow.

I'm choking on my sandwich reading that lol
And that's what I do

I used to think exactly like that too! I think as my fitness has improved though, a longer, more intense warm up has become perfectly possible without tiring me out before the race!

I've done a 12 hour team relay race at Brands Hatch a few times (great fun!) and one of my teammates was a semi-pro cyclist - ridiculously quick obviously! Before his stints he would do a looooong warm up on rollers and come off them drenched in sweat before he went out. I used to find it hard to understand why he was using up all that energy, but kind of understand it a bit more know - he was obviously knew what he was doing, and his high fitness level meant the warm up had very little affect on his energy levels
