Ads are nowhere as long as on itvx though, and I could skip over some blocks

(and @MadMalx ...) what brand have you guys got? Our Humax has recently been terrible with showing the schedule very far in advance, and forgets too many recordings. (This has been for about a year; we had many years of loyal service from it before that, money well spent!)

Yes, ancient Humax PVR. Has done well but nearing end of life I suspect.
I use a Panasonic DMR HWT130 Freeview PVR (bought as a factory refurb) for recording most commercial channels as it has a very simple to use minute skip button on the remote.
We did have a Humax many moons ago now, probably 2010 or thereabouts, it was very useful, but I think it died after about 6 years, hdd was toast I think.
We've lived without since, and now with superfast fibre connection, usually just watch stuff back off of iplayer/itvx/c4 etc etc, admittedly you can't skip through the adverts, but it's one less thing to administer and manage the downloads etc, so I'm pretty happy with it.
Although it has lapsed, I do normally subscribe to C4 for £40 a year, and that dispatched with the adverts which is useful.

A good episode of Kilometre Zero on The Cycling Podcast about coverage on UK television since the 80s
Interviewed Phil Liggett and the son of the producer who brought it to C4 (and who then went on to produce the ITV coverage)
Most interesting part was the £1m it cost to produce, which was added on top of whatever ITV paid ASO for the rights.

I think there are 5(?) episodes about the 80s? I've just given up on Episode 1. I couldn't handle Phil Liggett whispering, thank god he didn't commentate with that voice. (He is 82 of course! But I still couldn't finish the interview. Lovely guy though, and a great story)
