Temporary traffic lights now are "automatic" in the sense that you are just meant to switch the dial to the correct length of the roadworks and the timings are worked out automatically. I don't know what the solution for very long roadworks is though, there is a single track bridge near me with the same problem, you just about get off the bridge as oncoming traffic approaches.

Common problem and usually I'm looking for a place to duck in in case of oncoming traffic. Temporary lights usually offer somewhere on the "dug up" side

The worst I know is these permanent lights near Longnor. As a cyclist, you get a standing start up a hill of about 10%, probably 250m. It is impossible to get anywhere near the other lights before they change. You just have to watch out for oncoming vehicles. Usually they are fine and give you space to squeeze through with a friendly wave. But be ready to jump onto the verge if necessary

For any fellow Northampton based cyclists - I came across the temporary lights on the Overstone Road, between Overstone and the A43 roundabout last night. Coming from Overstone its a bit of an uphill pull, so it takes a few revolutions to get the bike moving. I went through as soon as it was green and lost the race to the end of the roadworks. The car waiting at the far end was already moving forward by the time I got there, thankfully there is plenty of space to squeeze past each other.
