The AA withdrew £72.00 from my bank account today without my knowledge or permission

To be fair, assuming you're still dry, if the initial meetings have kept you off the booze this long you've probably saved that much by not drinking, so the AA look to be good value.

I think it looks suspicious because of the wording. A A MEMBERSHIP
I would expect to see only “The AA” or perhaps ”AA.COM”

A bank statement should only show the company that is being paid and not the item purchased, in this instance it is showing membership.
I’m not a member of the AA so I cannot check but if other readers of this thread are AA members perhaps they could have a look on their statements and check how the debit charge is worded.

I managed to make human contact on Thursday, after 15 minutes of mind numbing repeat messages and mundane music on the AA's helpline phone number. The chap on the other end was very friendly, after I told him I have verbal communication problems when making phone calls. He said folk find his accent quite difficult to understand sometimes, due to him being from Newcastle. He then asked where I was from and on telling him I'm from a small town close to Accrington he immediately went into that "Accrington Stanley! Who are they mode"!, which I found very amusing!!!😂

Anyway, he said the AA had sent me an email in July, asking if I wanted to renew my long time elapsed membership, adding that a no reply was taken as a yes, which even he said was a bit dodgy! On telling him I hadn't seen it, due to sight problems he said he'd refund the £72.00 to me, with it going back into my bank account within five working days.

Glad you got us sorted. Such practice is highly immoral and I’m surprised it is even legal!

I had to play the disability card, as they say, even though I do have such problems. Like I said, the receiver of my call was a nice chap, but even so I did say I have sight problems, when he asked if I hadn't seen their email. I think if I'd just said I hadn't seen it, it might've been a different outcome.
