He also wore a helmet with a perspex disc in front of the visor. The disc would spin in the rain and autonatically clear itself and remain transparent at all times. He said this was also an aero-industry technology but I have no idea whether it was.

I think (not 100% sure) that it actually started out on ships - they had these devices on bridge windows.

PS: I've just looked this up and they were originally developed for cars but adopted by boats/ships.

MarkF, I used to own a large BMW the bike would take me to places I would not have wanted to travel to on an NX650. Bit like push bikes really when you take the time to think about it, would you go touring on a time trial bike, well OK in your case you might but I do not think it would be the best tool.

Name one place a large BMW can go, that an NX650 cannot. I have had large tourers myself, it's all a trade-off, what you gain in comfort and carrying capacity for distance, you lose in fun on arrival. Neither is "best".

You don't need £900 of gear to get you going with a reasonable degree of safety. .

Should have read the whole thread....it was the £900 comment that set me off.

You could go anywhere on a Puch moped but would you want to? I liked my cruise control and heated grips along with many other features.

The bells & whistles BMW's and the moped are at extreme opposite ends of the motorcycling spectrum, I wouldn't want either. I've been there.............tried to go far on too small a capacity and arrived at a destination on a large capacity machine that is zero fun for zipping about a new city/place. The Dommie was an ideal compromise.

In your opinion, others may differ.

Now that the OP is going to buy a car (by which I mean a Ford Ka, the only option for the frugal young) this is an unnecessary question, so I'll ask it anyway. And then I'll give the correct answer:

Q: If you could have only one motorcycle, what would it/should it be?

A: A Moto Guzzi V50 (but obviously one with the electrics sorted, with sticky tyres and the motor from a Monza).

I would put a Micra, 206, C3 etc. in front of a KA any day, the lower end Fords are not as good as their marketing makes out.

Ted Simon did his big adventure on a 500 trumpet which had a top speed on a good day of about 50mph with all the gear he carried.

Matthew, buy the gear and wear it. Road rash isn't a cool look.

It doesn't look silly like many 125's, nice looking traditional motorcycle. If I was keeping it though, I would definitely coat the thing in ACF-50 (not the discs!) if you don't want to see it dissolve very quickly, winter is coming.

I gave the bike its first proper warm up today. The tick over was a bit low to begin with and kept cutting out but thats the same on any motorbike.
It is pretty loud (makes an AWESOME sound!) so I think it would have awoken the neighbours if I had kept it.

Need to change the owner first (could take at least a month). Waiting for V5 to come in post. I will tax it too just to increase the sale price.

I just saw the original eBay advert. 2 previous owners, which means you bought it from the third owner. And 550km on the clock, which is less than 350 miles, which means each owner did an average of just over 100 miles on it.

When I was a courier, it was standard practice to ride around with an empty speedo cable. How can three owners put 350 miles on a motorcycle?

When it comes to buying the car, I would advise you very strongly to take your time, seek advice and pay heed to the advice.

This purchase went extremely quickly from want a car, to want a bike, to got a bike.

Take it slowly with the car and listen to what people advise you to do. Good luck with the sale when the papers come through and save hard for the car.
