The ACTUAL cost of a car

The tick over was a bit low to begin with and kept cutting out but thats the same on any motorbike.

Its not, particularly for a 18 month old bike!

Anyway do what Boris says unless you keep it. If you can store it somewhere were it wont dissolve then you may get a better price in the spring, October is not a great month for selling a motorbike.

If I wait till spring, then it will need an MOT by then. Something I am not willing to pay out for seeing as I am not riding it. Plus, unless it is already SORN, I need to get insured to declare it SORN. And I cannot get insured because I havent done the CBT yet. Its better to get rid of it as soon as possible.

Take it slowly with the car and listen to what people advise you to do. Good luck with the sale when the papers come through and save hard for the car.
As long as I sell the bike for what I bought it for, I should be able to afford a car in a year (well August). I am going to save hard as both my parents are very happy for me to get a car so at least there wont be any problems that end.

If you hadn't rushed to buy it without thinking things through, you wouldn't have to sell it.

Remember when buying a new car at such low price to always always always ask when the timing belt was changed... Try to get one that has been changed recently. Thats a very common fault and very costly should it snap and like a previous comment says, especially for the price, don't buy french.

No, you don't need insurance to declare a SORN.
Need to change the owner first (could take at least a month). Waiting for V5 to come in post. I will tax it too just to increase the sale price.
If you've not got insurance then you won't be able to tax it, the law requires that you have MOT and insurance to tax it, but you don't need insurance or an MOT to declare a SORN.

And if the V5 doesn't come then that might create further problems.

If the V5 does come then check that it's the right one, it should be it should be red with some blue on it. The old one was blue and is no longer valid, DVLA changed them because of a break in at the DVLA and theft of the V5 documents

Now that the OP is going to buy a car (by which I mean a Ford Ka, the only option for the frugal young) this is an unnecessary question, so I'll ask it anyway. And then I'll give the correct answer:

Q: If you could have only one motorcycle, what would it/should it be?

A: A Moto Guzzi V50 (but obviously one with the electrics sorted, with sticky tyres and the motor from a Monza).
Complete custom chop with wide a$$ rear tire, slammed to the ground, solo seat and wicked rake all done up in metallic flake green flames (cuz green is my fave color) . But I def don't need anything over a 700cc.

I gave the bike its first proper warm up today. The tick over was a bit low to begin with and kept cutting out but thats the same on any motorbike.

That's where you're wrong. It's not the same on any motorbike. It should not be cutting out. Are you using the choke?

Just adjust the tickover at the carb when it's warmed up.

I believe the mileage, it looks in remarkable condition for a Chinese 125 replica, can't have been used in inclement weather!

Heater matrixes (matrices?) can start to leak on old cars and be expensive.

A neat trick is to simply reconnect the hoses to by-pass the matrix. This will keep you going till you get it fixed or sell the car to a mug who doesn't test the heating.

I had mine fixed but not everyone does.

Agree about French cars. I'd a lot of trouble with a not-so-old Renault which we gave up on eventually and p-xed in despair.

We bought Japanese, a Toyota Yaris. At least we thought it was Japanese but turns out it was made in... .... France. Pretty good so far though.

Selling a motorbike at this time of year will be rewarded with a very poor return as most people don't like riding in the winter.
Whatever you do, you will most likely lose money on it if you sell now, so live with that.
Pump up the tyres, stand it on a piece of old carpet in the garage, Spray it with ACF 50 (not the brakes), take the battery out and charge that every 2-3 weeks.
MOT it in the spring and advertise it then. You will get your best price then, and the MOT will add value to it.
Don't tax it as you need to insure first to do that and that costs a lot of money at your age.

It is possible to have a low mileage on a motor bike. I have done less than 2000 miles on my CB500 in the past eight years. I might add 130 miles this weekend when I go to Darlington for a blues festival.

My local bike M/dealer (hes been there since 1969) has a low opinion of chinese motorcycles; in his experience they drop to bits and have apalling metal quality.

Sorry!
