So... I've been neglecting my guitar playing for a while in favour of synthesisers but I've decided to get back on it. I should probably try and make some 80s vibe synthwave with sick guitar solos, best of both worlds.

Anyway, for largely sentimental reasons and although I'm never going to be a good enough player to do it justice, I may have just bought my ultimate dream guitar. Watch this space...

Mrs D asking me lots of questions about Octave Mandolins. Christmas barely 4 weeks away and the line of questioning makes me suspicious.

Maybe not quite ultimate dream guitar, that would probably be a mid 90s Tidal Wave, but it's pretty damn close. IYKYK.

Has anyone had any experience removing a rounded out truss rod nut? The way I see it I've got two options, fancy gripper wrench from StewMac (£30) or cheap bolt extractor from Screwfix (£3). Anyone used either? I'd rather not spend ten times more than I need to.

Don't worry, this is on an old guitar which needs a fair amount of sprucing up, it's not the new Palm Bay.

Does that shed any light on it, out of interest, if it's a bolt on neck, wouldn't it be cheaper & less hassle to get a cheap one from Temu or Ali Express

No. It's a rounded out nut, I'm hoping the threads themselves are still OK.

The neck is custom and irreplaceable. If I do end up having to get a new one then I'd rather cut off my own testicles than get it from Temu. I think with some work it can probably be saved but I also don't want it to become a money pit, hence my reluctance to spend £30 if £3 will do the job.

No. The video doesn't address the issue I described and in any case is a promo for the company I'm asking about. It's hardly going to provide a balanced opinion.

That's right. The headstock's got a wrap on it which impedes access so someone's* gone in at an angle and rounded it off. The StewMac tool has a tapered end and is designed to deal with exactly this issue but £££

spend £3 at screwfix and if it doesn't work you might have to spend and extra £30. Better than spending £30 when the £3 tool might have worked. If the screwfix tool is a standard nut extractor with a left hand thread, i can't see how it won't work.
