Every time I see those #%>* adverts I die a little bit inside. Almost as bad as the Iggy Pop ones, though it was funny that the insurance didn't cover musicians!

Just do as 90% of the population now seem to, buy your hot beverage from a 'coffee' shop, drink it whilst walking/driving and then discard the container wherever you like (hedge rows are popular). When you want another one they give you a brand new cup!

When we ran pubs we used to clean the cups with Steradent,leave overnight,like new in the morning

Salt, lots of it, is good for getting tea stains off - I don't know if that is less abrasive than commercial scourers.

My bone china mugs get terribly stained by tannin, that not even the dishwasher will shift. The only way to clean them properly is with a rough scourer.
Is there a better way? Should I ditch them and buy new ones? Swallow my pride (and my Assam) and just drink out of stained crockery?
I await your valuable input with baited breath.

You could soak some of that crap beer we had on Saturday night in it...that would do the trick

Actually we use Homeline Solvent Cleaner which works very well. No need to use every time, just now and then.

Boiling water, teaspoon of washing soda (not bicarb). Leave an hour or two. Tannin scum floats off. Rinse well.

dash of bleach and top up with water. Leave overnight. Quick scrub in the morning and they're shinier than a really shiny thing

Are you brewing the tea in the your cups/mugs? If so then I would advise using a pot instead. Then the tea shouldn't be in your best crockery long enough to stain it. But do not ever use soap or bleach to clean the tannin from the pot. Your brew will never taste the same again!
