In 1959 Buddy Holly chartered a plane for the journey between Iowa and Minnesota. He was joined by The Big Bopper, famously Tommy Allsop and Ricky Valens tossed a coin to decide who took the final place on the flight, Valens won the toss took his place on the flight and was killed alongside Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper when the plane crashed. Tommy Allsup lived a long and successful life. He died recently at the age of 85.

I watched a documentary about this the other day. It was interviews with people who were on the road with Buddy Holly. I missed the beginning but I think they were mostly back up musicians and roadies.
One guy was supposed to get on the plane, but he gave up his seat at the last minute.
It was quite moving.
