The least said about yesterday the better. Rovers are at best in a relegation fight, at worst, obviously, we will go down. An apparently good win at Hull, 0 - 3, last Saturday had bouyed fans and we looked forward to a decent performance. A note of caution from some who went to the MKM and reported Hull were dreadful.
The Rovers side that kicked off yesterday bore little resemblance to the one that finished last season. Four quality, established players have left, nine unknowns have arrived. The first half saw Rovers under the cosh and depending on who you asked we could gave gone in at half-time between one and four nil down. It was one down from a clear penalty that reduced us to ten men.
There was some improvement in the second half but equally two or three dreadful performances from players expected to play a big role this year.
In Riberio, Hyam (possibly going), Pickering, Wharton, Carter and Tronstadt we have quality, experienced Championship players. Five defenders and a defensive midfielder. Toth is establishing himself as our first choice keeper and looks very promising. Cantwell in my view is our only creative player and while I know opions are divided I think he is very good. Without him we offer nothing going forward.
A special mention has to go to Scott Wharton. He came on as a second half sub at half-time. In his second or third game after 15 months injured he looked top class and head and shoulders above the rest.
The rest of the squad are unknowns or second choices. At best we have one striker, Ohashi, Gueye is appallingly bad. Our "coach" is a charlatan who is clearly out of his depth. Our MD/CEO resigned two or three months ago meaning there is no one to ask the hard questions.
Relegation beckons and in our 150th year, the club was founded 5th November 1875, it's very sad to see how far we have fallen in the last 10 months. It's going to be a miserable season.
