FNRttC The Friday Night Ride to the Coast - Whitstable 27th August 2010

GBS - your Mum made a good choice!

I have a 2nd edition of 'A Black Girl in her Search for God' by gbs (Jnr) - and also the 'antidote' called 'Gabriel in his search for Mr Shaw' - something like that.
Superb illustrations by John Farleigh in the gbs book - I gave away a 1st edition to another illustrator called Fritz Wegner...now I'm rambling - again! Tyres await!

(I have duffed up some new PR3s going from Newhaven to Brighton on NC2 (or 3, can't remember) - twice as bad as our ride leader's divertissiments toward Arundel!)

It's not hilly!
Wrong! There is one monstrous hill - but it is DOWN into Rochester.

As long as your brake blocks/discs are OK then no problem. Sorry, wrong again. The climb back up the steps to the bar in Whitstable can be a bit challenging ...

User10571, who persuaded me to put Whitstable on the list, took me on the first recce ride. If memory serves it went up a 1 in 7 footpath and down a 1 in 5 footpath. At one point we rode across a graveyard, me thinking 'the ground's a little squishy...OMG we're riding over dead people!'

Our first two rides to Whitstable went down the old Roman Road to Dartford, which was a bit up and down, but we've since diverted north through Belvedere (to be completely accurate, around Belvedere) and down the Dartford bypass.

Like all the others have said, the Whitstable route is pretty flat (as are most of the FNRttCs, possibly Ditchling excepted). This is May's route, and we never got over 175 feet above sea level, so there simply isn't enough altitude to have any really steep hills (or not for very long anyway).

I've done it on my single speed, and plenty of others have done it on fixed, and it's not difficult even like that.

As ever I'm happy to TEC or WM, although on May's ride I didn't TEC but still ended up being almost the last rider in, since I stopped to help with a double puncture. (not that it really matters at this point if we then spend the next few hours "recovering" with a few bevvies!)

As per email, I'm afraid I have to bale out

Sure spending the weekend on the Isle of Wight will be a poor second but it has been decreed that I must attend!

See you all in Harwich on the 17th

Simon, you will pleased to hear that I have bought some side pods from Arkel therefore the panniers (and more importantly) the rack have been removed.

No kidding, went out for a quick ride on Sunday and I never knew that removing the panniers would have such an effect on drag. Went down a hill that's 11% and for a few seconds the trike acclerated so quickly I didn't feel in control. Hit 46mph free wheeling.

Can't wait to this ride though, thinking ahead to Brockley Hill...

Excellent news for the Lee/Lovejoy Downhill Trike Challenge. I'm beginning to wish I'd put more than a tenner on it...

You should have gone for a 'Trikast' - is Tiger riding too?
I'm having serious doubts about this ride. The thought of Lee and Tiger going downhill together is pretty darn terrifying. A bit like the Bullitt, but lower.

Mind you, if you had a well-known recumbent film-maker to be in attendance, you'd be looking at some serious footage. Might end in a cloud of carbon fragments, though.
