Not out on the ice in road slicks are we folks?

Slicks or not, nothing other than studded tyres will stop you going down. I've crashed 3 times in one morning on the MTB with off road tyres before now. Only studded tyres for me these days when icy.

Be careful as forums are full of folk crashing on ice. There was a spate of broken bones (some hips) last year.

I was going to go for a ride just now but I have not re-fitted the SMW to my bike yet. It's still wearing Specialised Armadillo Nimbuses. It's due to become mild again on monday when I'm back at work so think I will give riding a miss until I have to ride to work. I think the solution is to have two sets of wheels as I can see all this tyre changing will become a bit of a chore. (n+1). Just remembered the guided busway is flooded so I'll be driving anyway. Oh well, the thought was there.

I had a dog walker warn me of a stretch of black ice I was approaching this morning. I slowed right down and came to no harm thanks to a decent blokes warning. It was on a road closed to traffic so the ice doesn't get broken up.

Over 5 times did i hear the phrase "you are very brave" today. Kind of thinking very stupid myself. :cold:

Up the hills was ropey enough, with the back wheel all over the place under even the slightest of power. Going down on the other hand was plain suicidal. Had to get off the bike at one point when i had stopped and the bike (and myself included) still slid forward. Unclipped and tried to walk to the verge and was like banana skin time cartoon style! Mountain bike shoes too.
Managed to get to the verge, tuck tail between my legs and waddle down. :shy:

Went for a bit of offroad instead and it was not much better. The mud and usual wet dirt roads were ice traps. Average speed today over a 30 mile run was 12mph, including offroad. That says it all really.

The roads were bonkers today, i was out walking and the ice was bad, just like a sheet of glass. i'll safely stay on the turbo when the ice queen comes a calling, just not worth the hassle of broken bones.

I have wondered whether, for those like me who haven't got the best part of three grand to spend on a recumbent trike, it would be possible to fit/bodge a pair of stabilizers to the rear wheel to improve stability.

Sounds like a brilliant idea, can we have pictures?
I promise not to laugh
